FRESNO, Calif.- Arizona State's hopes for its first appearance as a team, for either men and women, suffered a blow Saturday as the Sun Devil women finished sixth and the men eighth at the NCAA West Regional Cross Country Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno, Calif. It was the best effort at an NCAA regional for ASU since 1986, when ASU had sixth and seventh place finishes for its women and men, respectively.
Senior Priscilla Hein led ASU's women, finishing 13th in 17:22, the best finish by a Sun Devil woman since 1988. Sophomore Kelly MacDonald also came up with a top 20 finish, placing 20th in 17:44. On the men's side, freshmen Juan Chavira and Fasil Bizuneh led ASU, finishing 18th and 20th in 31:18 and 31:20, respectively. They were the top two freshmen in the race and it was the first top 20 finishes by ASU men since 1991.
Stanford ran away with the men's regional championship with 37 points. Arizona edged the Cardinal on the women's side, winning by two points, 78-80. The Wildcats swept the individual honors as Abdi Abdirahman won the men's title and Amy Skieresz captured the women's championship.
The top two teams from nine regionals receive automatic bids to the NCAA Championships Nov. 24 in Lawrence, Kan. Thirteen at-large bids will be announced Monday.
