WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Willie Bloomquist went 3-for-4 and scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning Saturday as Arizona State beat top-seeded Wichita State 6-4 in the NCAA Midwest Regional.
The loss knocked the Shockers out of the tournament, while the Sun Devils advanced to Saturday's late game against Oklahoma State.
Bloomquist doubled and scored on Rudy Arguelles' single off starter Erich Bryan (8-3) in the seventh. He added an insurance run in the ninth inning, scoring with the help of two Wichita State errors after drawing a walk.
Catcher Brian Preston threw the ball away as Bloomquist stole second, allowing Bloomquist to reach third on the play. He scored when shortstop Zach Sorenson committed another throwing error on a ground ball by Mikel Moreno.
The Shockers (56-7) committed four errors and lost despite outhitting the Sun Devils 14-10.
Arizona State scored three runs in the top of the sixth, two on a single by Jeff Phelps, to go up 4-1, but Preston hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 4-4.
Starter Aaron Kramer (8-2) gave up 11 hits in six innings but didn't walk anyone and struck out five. Chad Pennington pitched the final three innings for his third save.
Sorenson had three hits for the Shockers, including a solo home run that tied the game 1-1 in the first inning.
