TEMPE, Ariz. - The top-seeded Arizona State men's tennis team (16-5) advanced out of its regional by shutting out Pepperdine University (23-8), 4-0 today at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
Arizona State did not lose a single match, posting a perfect 8-0 record during the two-day regional. The Sun Devils will now advance to the round of 16 team championship in Athens, Georgia for the first time since 1995.
The Sun Devils, for the 18th time this year, gained the early advantage by winning the doubles point. On the No. 3 court, ASU's Tim Hammond and Casey Was won their 11th consecutive match as they defeated Pepperdine's Chase Exon and Alastair Garland, 8-4. On the No. 1 court, the 16th-ranked duo of Ed Carter and Jeff Williams defeated the 12th-ranked pair of Kelly Gullett and John Hui also by an 8-4 score. Court No. 2 did not finish their match.
In singles play, ASU freshman Matt Klinger made quick work of Exon on the fifth court, 6-3, 6-1. Carter then pushed ASU's margin to three points with as 6-2, 7-6 (6) win over Pepperdine's Garland on the fourth court. As he did in ASU's win over UCLA earlier in the season, junior Alex Osterrieth clinched the dual with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Eni Ghidirmic on the third court.
Arizona State will now head to Athens, Georgia to face either Vanderbilt or Illinois on Saturday, May 22.
