TEMPE, Ariz. -- The 10th-ranked Arizona State baseball team (32-16, 18-8 Six-Pac) was defeated by the Arizona Wildcats (31-20, 11-15 Six-Pac) 10-9 this afternoon in front of a crowd of 2,979 at Packard Stadium. Arizona won the weekend series 2-1.
For the Sun Devils offensively, centerfielder Rudy Arguelles went 3-for-4 on the afternoon with a double and triple. Arguelles scored two runs and drove in two runs. First baseman Dan Meier had a 2-for-3 outing while scoring two runs and driving in one. Catcher Jeremy Jones also contributed to the Sun Devil offense by going 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored. Starting pitcher Phill Lowery went four and a third innings giving up seven runs (all earned) on eight hits. Lowery struck out four batters while walking one. Closer Chuck Crumpton picked up his fourth loss of the year going three innings giving up one earned run on five hits and two strike outs.
Colin Porter led the Arizona offense hitting the eventual game winning home run in the top of the eighth. Porter was 3-for-5 on the afternoon with three runs scored and one RBI. Third baseman Erik Torres went 4-for-5 on the day with a double and three RBI. Shortstop Keoni DeRenne also contributed by going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Starting pitcher for the Wildcats Dave Abbott went five and a third innings giving up eight hits and nine runs (seven earned). Darell Hussman (4-5) picked up the win for Arizona going two and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits and no runs. Closer Ryan Moskau recorded his seventh save of the season.
