TEMPE, Ariz. -- The sixth-ranked Arizona State baseball team (10-3, 0-0) lost to Washington State (3-3, 0-0) 17-12 Sunday in front of 1,419 fans in the final game of the series at Packard Stadium.
The Devils were down at one point 12-0, but came back to score four runs in the sixth, six runs in the seventh, and two runs in the eighth. But a five spot by the Cougars in the top of the eighth, made the comeback even harder.
Leading the Devils was sophomore Willie Bloomquist who reached base four out of six times on the day. Bloomquist finished the day 3-for-5 with on RBI and two runs scored.
Also helping the Devils was junior third baseman Andrew Beinbrink, who hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh, for two of ASU's six runs. Senior Richy Leon scored three more of those six runs on a three-run homer, two batters before Beinbrink. Leon finished the day 1-for-4 with three runs scored, and three RBI.
Beinbrink finished the day 2-for-5 with two runs scored, and four RBI. Senior leadoff hitter Mikel Moreno also chipped in a 2-for-4 outing, and scored three runs.
Starting pitcher Jay Gehrke (2-1) picked up the loss for the Devils, only going two-thirds of an inning, and giving up five runs. The Devils went through seven pitchers on the afternoon.
Washington State was led by right fielder Jason Grove, who was a home run away from hitting for the cycle. Grove ended the day 3-for-6 with five RBI, and two runs scored. Starting pitcher Todd Meldahl picked up the win for the Cougars, going six innings, giving up three earned runs, five hits, and striking out seven.
The Sun Devils are next at home on Wednesday, February 18th against the Cougars of BYU. Game time is at 4 p.m. at Packard Stadium. Next weekend the Devils begin Six Pac play as they head to Berkeley to play a three-game series with Cal.
