BOULDER, Colo. -
The No. 27 Arizona State Sun Devils women's tennis team defeated Colorado in their Pac-12 season opener on Friday afternoon, 4-2, in Boulder, Colo.
"I thought the girls competed very well especially this being our first indoor match," ASU head coach Sheila McInerney said.
The Sun Devils clinched the match after the completion of the fifth singles set, giving ASU a perfect 1-0 record to start in the Pac-12.
The doubles pairing of 40th-ranked Jacqueline Cako and Nicole Smith started the day off with the earning of the doubles point, building off a win on the third court from Leighann Sahagun and Desirae Krawczyk.
The singles matches proved just as important, with senior Jacqueline Cako earning the first point to put the Sun Devils up 2-0. Freshman Desirae Krawczyk dropped the second set in three sets, along with sophomore Leighann Sahagun to put the Buffs dead even at two all.
"Hannah (James) and Stephanie (Vlad) did a great job after Leighann (Sahagun) and Desirae (Krawczyk) lost tough three setters," McInerney said.
The Sun Devils will take the day off for travel tomorrow before facing the Utes of Utah in their second Pac-12 matchup on the road Sunday afternoon.
