TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- The Arizona State Sun Devil Baseball program will open spring practices on Tuesday (Jan. 6) in preparation for the 2004 season as the No. 18 team in the nation according to the recently released Baseball America preseason poll.

The Sun Devils are also ranked No. 7 by Collegiate Baseball heading into the season-opening series against No. 21 Florida State (Feb. 6-8). ASU is coming off a 54-14 season last year, advancing to within one game of the College World Series. The Devils will feature a young squad when they take the diamond in 2004, having to replace 12 drafted players and returning only two pitchers with any experience in the program. Juniors Jeff Larish (OF) and Dustin Pedroia (SS) have both earned numerous preseason All-America awards and head into the season as strong candidates for National Player of the Year honors.

Defending national champion Rice, whom ASU will face Feb. 22 in Houston, is the No. 1 team in Baseball America's poll with Louisiana State, Miami, Cal State Fullerton, Georgia Tech, Stanford, South Carolina, Texas, Long Beach State and Tulane rounding out the Top 10. ASU is scheduled to play 17 games against six teams listed in the annual preseason top 25 (No. 1 Rice, No. 6 Stanford, No. 10 Tulane, No. 14 Wichita State, No. 16 Arizona, No. 22 Florida State).
