USA Diving World Championships Scoring

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Arizona State diver Harrison Jones qualified for his first ever FINA World Championships on the 1-meter, Wednesday, at the USA Diving World Championships qualifier in Tallahassee, Fla. Jones punched his ticket, with his second-place finish on the 1-meter, to represent the United States in Barcelona, Spain this July.

The FINA World Championships are the pinnacle of diving, swimming and many water-based sports during non-Olympic years. Jones scored a total of 784.15 points to finish second to fellow qualifier Kristian Ipsen of Stanford.

“I’m happy with how I did today. I missed one dive pretty good, but other than that I landed on my head and got in clean so I was very happy,” Jones said.

In his senior season at Arizona State, Jones finished the regular season undefeated on both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards and set a new school record on the 1-meter at Pac-12 Championships with a score of 437.50. Jones also was a two-time NCAA All-American at ASU, finishing in fifth place on both the 1-meter and 3-meter at NCAA Championships. Jones, along with Riley McCormick, scored the most points at NCAA’s for any diving team with 53.

Tomorrow, Jones will try his hand at the 3-meter springboard and also look to compete for the United States in the event. The USA Diving world trials continue through Monday, May 20.
