A look back at Sun Devil women's basketball's 2012-13 accomplishments and recognizing the team's award winners.

Scoring Leader: Janae Fulcher - Fulcher scored in double figures 17 times, including five times in ASU’s last six games. She had four games of 20 or more points, shooting a combined 70 percent in those four games (38-54).

Steals Leader: Promise Amukamara - Amukamara finished ninth in the Pac-12, averaging nearly two steals per game (1.9). She had three or more steals eight times, including a team single-game-best seven steals in ASU’s 74-58 win over Florida in the championship game of the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout.

Rebounds Leader: Joy Burke - In her first season as a full-time starter, Burke finished 18th in the Pac-12 in rebounding (6.1 rpg). Burke posted double figures in rebounds seven times, including a career-best 12 boards on three occasions: at UTEP (Nov. 18) vs. N.C. State (Nov. 24) and vs. Longwood (Dec. 22).

Assists Leader: Adrianne Thomas - Thomas finished 11th in the Pac-12, averaging nearly three assists per game (2.9). Thomas had five or more assist five times, including a team single-game-best eight assists vs. San Diego on Dec. 12.

Tom Johnson Award (free throw shooting percentage): Promise Amukamara - Amukamara made 82.8 percent of her free throws (53-64) for the season. She made four or more free throws five times and was a perfect 6-6 in ASU’s win over Longwood (Dec. 22). Amukamara had made 81.4 percent of her free throws in her first two seasons as a Sun Devil.

Most Improved Player Award: Katie Hempen - Hempen, who had to sit out the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules, will be a welcome addition to the Sun Devils’ roster in 2013-14. As a freshman at SIUE in 2011-12, Hempen was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Freshman of the Year.

Community Service: Joy Burke - Burke tallied more than 80 hours of community service, including appearances at Fellowship of Christian Athlete camps, youth clinics, school visits, Pat’s Run and Race for the Cure.

Academic Award: Eliza Normen: A biomedical engineering major who is a member of ASU’s Barrett Honors College, Normen (3.57 GPA) earned Pac-12 Second-Team All-Academic distinction in 2013.

Title IX Celebration: The Sun Devil women’s basketball program kicked off the 2012-13 season by commemorating the 40th anniversary of Title IX. In the weeks leading up to its season opener against Texas Tech, Sun Devil WBB recognized the accomplishments of 40 individuals whose stories reflected the important of Title IX. Those individuals were recognized at halftime of ASU’s contest against Texas Tech. Following the game, ASU head coach Charli Turner Thorne moderated a Title IX panel that included Phoenix Mercury Vice President Ann Meyers Drysdale, Desert Vista High School Principal Dr. Anna Battle, former NCAA President Judy Sweet and Pac-12 Associate Commissioner Chris Dawson.

South Point Thanksgiving Shootout Champions: The Sun Devils captured wins over UNI and Florida to capture the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout tournament title. ASU played three games in three days, coming up just short of making it out of the weekend with a perfect 3-0 record. ASU shot 47 percent against UNI (Nov. 23) as Micaela Pickens (13 points) combined for 27 points in the win. One day later, the Sun Devils came up short against N.C. State, 72-68 before bouncing back in the championship game with a 22-point win over eventual WNIT semifinalist, Florida. Janae Fulcher scored a career-high 26 points against the Gators. Her 13 field goals in the game tied for the second-highest individual total in the Pac-12 this season. Fulcher (13.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg) and Burke (12.3 ppg, 7.7 rpg) combined to average 26 points and 13.4 rebounds per game during the tournament and were both named to the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout All-Tournament Team.

SUN DEVILS WIN SEVEN OF EIGHT: The win over Florida started a stretch in which the Sun Devils won seven of eight games. Included in that span was a five-game winning streak, which represented the 19th time since 2001 that ASU had a winning streak of five or more games. The only loss in that period was a 65-59 setback to Dayton in the championship game of the ASU Classic. The Flyers, who would go on to a 28-3 season and round of 32 finish in the NCAA Tournament, were held to what at the time was their lowest point total of the season. In fact, ASU was one of only six teams to limit Dayton, which finished the season sixth in the country in scoring offense, to 65 or fewer points.

TOTAL TEAM EFFORT GIVES Promise Amukamara, who scored all nine of her points in the second half, tied Janae Fulcher for the team lead in scoring.

SUN DEVILS SWEEP ARIZONA TO CLAIM TERRITORIAL CUP POINT: The Sun Devils came through with a pair of down-to-the-wire wins over in-state rival Arizona to once again claim the Territorial Cup point. ASU defeated the Wildcats 81-77 in a double-overtime thriller in Tucson on Feb. 19. In the rematch in Tempe on Feb. 24, the Sun Devils claimed a 59-58 win. In the two games against Arizona, Promise Amukamara averaged 12.0 points (10-20 FGs/50 percent), 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 3.0 assists. Burke scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win in Tucson. ASU has now been victorious in 18 of its last 20 meetings against Arizona.
