HAMPTON, Va. – The Arizona State wrestling team split a pair of duals against North Dakota State and Rider on Friday to open the 33rd Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va., winning the elimination match to stay alive in tomorrow's consolation brackets.

The Sun Devils dropped a close one to North Dakota State to open the competition, falling 22-19 and losing a tough match to the Bison for the second time in as many years at the event after the team dropped a 23-19 decision in last year’s elimination bracket.

ASU bounced back for a 28-16 victory over Rider University to advance to fight another day as they will take on Kent State tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET.  Live video coverage of some of the duals will be available at www.virginiaduals.com tomorrow.

HAMPTON, Va. – The Sun Devil wrestling team had to dig themselves out of a hole to avoid elimination, but were victorious in all four upper weight classes to complete the comeback and the team eliminated Rider University with a 28-16 victory in the consolation bracket of the Virginia Duals.

Following a major decision by Dalton Miller over Patrick Skinner at 125 pounds to kick off the competition, ASU dropped the next three matches to fall behind 13-4 early on.

Codey Combs got the comeback started with a 17-2 tech fall over Patrick Sabatini to bring ASU back within four but a No. 16 Ramon Santiago 6-0 decision over Joel Smith put Rider back up 16-9.

That’s when the big guys did their thing.

Blake Stauffer scored a major victory over James Brundage with a 12-2 pounding and Kevin Radford scored an injury default 6:31 into the 184 match-up over Clint Morrison to put ASU back on top to stay.

North Dakota State, 22 – ASU, 19

HAMPTON, VA. -- The Sun Devils struggled in the lower weights and gave up bonus point victories in three of the first six matches as they dropped the opener of the Virginia Duals, 22-19, to North Dakota State.

ASU's early struggles left them in a 22-6 hole entering ASU’s strength in the upper weights and the team could not stage the comeback.

No. 9 Trent Sprenkle knocked off Ares Carpio with an 18-2 tech fall at 125 pounds to start the competition and that set the tone for the rest of the match as ASU gave up major decisions at 133 and 141 pounds and a pin at 165 pounds by No. 6 Steven Monk over Parker Madl.

ASU’s big guys tried to mount a rally starting with a 3-2 decision by Blake Stauffer over Kurtis Julson at 174 pounds, followed by decisions by Kevin Radford and Jake Meredith.  However, the team couldn’t find any bonus points until Levi Cooper majored John Gosewelle, 14-6, in the final match of the day and by then it was too late.

The Sun Devils dropped into the consolation bracket where they faced Rider University in an elimination matchup.
