IRVINE, Calif. - The #5 Arizona State University water polo team defeated #15 CSU Northridge and upset #4 Cal on Saturday as the squad punched its ticket to the semifinals at the UC Irvine Invitational in Irvine, Calif.

With the victory, the Sun Devils will take on #1 Stanford tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at the UC Irvine Pool for a chance to advance to the finals.

It will mark the first time the school has advanced to the semifinals of the illustrious tournament, which could be argued to be more competitive than the NCAA Championship itself.  This year, 15 of the 16 teams in action were ranked in the national top-20 headed into the weekend.

Recaps of each of today's games can be found below.

#5 ASU 11, #15 CSUN 6

The Sun Devils overcame a slow start against the #15 Matadors to pull away with the victory in the opener of the UCI Tournament. The Sun Devils knocked of CSU Northridge, 11-6, to improve to 10-1 on the season.

E.B. Keeve was phenomenal yet again in the cage for the Sun Devils as the freshman stopped 14 shots over the course of the game and shut out CSUN in the third quarter as ASU scored four unanswered goals in the frame to put away the game that was tight through the early going, with the teams heading to the half with ASU up just 5-4.

Shannon Haas had her third hat trick of the season in a three-goal effort to lead the Sun Devils and bring her total to 23 goals on the year.  ASU also got two goals each out of Alicia Brightwell, Anna Kertes and Petra Pardi.

Gao Ao and Katie Svercheck also scored for the Sun Devils while Gao would also manage three takeaways on the contest.

#5 ASU 8, #4 CAL 7

Arizona State logged its first upset of the season in the quarterfinals of the UC Irvine Invitational, knocking off Cal 8-7 to advance to Sunday's semifinals for the first time in school history.

A hotly contested battle, neither team was able to pull away in the contest, matching each other goal-for-goal for the first three periods to set up the dramatic final frame.

The Sun Devils got on the board early in the fourth quarter and that allowed freshman E.B. Keeve to continue making her case as one of the top newcomers in the nation this season.

Keeve had 14 saves on the game, including four consecutive ones in the fourth quarter to keep the Golden Bears off the board and seal the upset.

With the performance, Keeve has logged double-digit saves in all but one game this season and still has only allowed double-digits in scoring just once.

ASU got two goals each out of Shannon Haas, Petra Pardi and Gao Ao while Alicia Brightwell and Amanda Young each found the back of the net in the victory.
