Ten Sun Devil Harriers Garner Academic All-Pac-10 Honors

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Pac-10 Conference announced its 2002 men's and women's cross country academic teams Friday. Included were 10 Arizona State harriers in all with seven women and three men. Cynthia Atencio (Jr., Richland, Wash.), who carries a 3.67 in anthropology, led the way for the Sun Devils by earning a spot on the women's first team after two-consecutive years of garnering honorable mention honors. Jeremy Rasmussen (Sr., Glendale, Ariz.), a computer information major with a 3.33 grade point average, was named to the men's second team after three years of being selected to the honorable mention team.

On the women's side, Joanie Baca (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.), Alvina Begay (Jr., Ganado, Ariz.), Desiree Davila (So., Chula Vista, Calif.), Penny Jacobson (So., Scottsdale, Ariz.), Amanda Lyon (Fr., Phoenix, Ariz.) and Lisa Pohlit (Jr., Tempe, Ariz.) all were named to the honorable mention team. Baca earned her second-consecutive honorable mention award while the rest of women honored by the conference were selected for the first time. Atencio's selection to the first team extended a streak of four years in a row that a Sun Devil women earned a spot on the top list.

Joining Rasmussen on the men's lists was Kris Alexander (Sr., Franklin, Ariz.) and Dan Maher (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.), both honorable mention selections. Alexander earned his second academic accolade following a selection to the honorable mention team in 2000. Maher made his third appearance on the honorable mention list after taking the honor in 2000 and 2001.

The No. 17 women's team, along with Fasil Bizuneh (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.) and JJ Duke (So., Clovis, Calif.), will compete in the 2002 NCAA Championships Monday on the campus of Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind.
