Pac-12 Release

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Pac-12 Conference has released the 2013 Men’s And Women’s Track and Field All-Academic teams and the Sun Devils were honored with 18 selections, Commissioner Larry Scott has announced.

The ASU squad picked up nine All-Academic nods on the men’s side – including six First-Team selections - and nine on the women’s end as well

The six First-Team All-Academic selections for the Sun Devil men paced the conference as no other team in the league posted more than three selections onto the First-Team.

The men’s selections were led by Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, senior Nick Happe, who was the conference champion at 5,000-meters and was also recently named to CoSIDA’s Capital One All-Academic District VIII team as well.  One of the team’s preeminent scholar-athletes through the years, this was Happe’s first selection to the Pac-12 First Team after making the second team last year and earning an honorable mention the year before.

Happe maintains over a 4.00 GPA in accountancy and was a student at Barrett, The Honors College while attending ASU.  Now graduated, Happe will be continuing his postgraduate schoolwork at the prestigious Mendoza College of Business at Notre Dame.

Four other Sun Devils on the First Team were point scorers at the Pac-12 Championships. The list includes: senior Dylan Austin (pole vault), redshirt sophomore Garrett Baker-Slama, junior Jordan Benesh and redshirt junior Nathan Estes.

Baker-Slama and Benesh were also named to the Capital One All-Academic District VIII team as well.  It was Estes’s third All-Academic honor from the Pac-12 and the second for both Baker-Slama and Austin.

Redshirt junior Steven Schnieders also earned love, making the First-Team for the third consecutive season.

Derick Hinch, Ryan Herson and Darius Terry all earned honorable mention accolades for the ASU men, as well.

On the women’s side, three women earned the First-Team nod in Sarah Geren, Alex Hartig and Linda Kuenzi.  Geren was also named to the Capital One All-District team earlier this week.

It was the second consecutive First-Team selection for Hartig, a sophomore and second first-team selection for Kuenzi as well. It was the first time Geren had been named to the list.

There were six honorable mention selections for the women as well on a list that includes Constance Ezugha, Hailey Hanna, Alycia Herring, Shelby Houlihan, Anna Jelmini and Shaylah Simpson

Jelmini was recently crowned the NCAA National Champion in the women’s discus.

This year’s honorees brings the Sun Devil women’s track and field all-time conference All-Academic selections to 201 while the men now lay claim to 162 such selections.  With cross country conference accolades included in the fold, the Sun Devils now have had an astounding 560 conference All-Academic nods in program history, dating back to 1990.
