URBANA, Ill. -
On Friday afternoon, the senior pairing of Jacqueline Cako and Nicole Smith defeated Isaura Enrique and Samantha Vickers of Tulsa 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2013 NCAA DI Doubles Championship in Urbana, Ill. The win secured All-American status for both Arizona State student-athletes in doubles play as well.
"Nikki (Smith) and Jacqueline (Cako) played extremely well this afternoon, I could not have been more pleased with their performance," ASU Head Coach Sheila McInerney said. "They worked so well together and were super aggressive on the court, there is nothing else you could ask for from them as a coach."
Enrique and Vickers defeated Kristie Ahn and Nicole Gibbs of Stanford 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the round of 16 for Friday's match up. Cako and Smith defeated Breaunna Addison and Noel Scott of Texas in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 prior to defeating the pairing from Tulsa.
Earlier in the day, Cako was knocked from the singles bracket by Breaunna Addison of Texas in two sets 6-2, 6-4. Cako's match in the Sweet 16 marked the earning of the third straight All-American designation for the third-year senior in singles play.
"I thought Briaunna played really well today and didn't give Jacqueline an inch. She played aggressively but also didn't make any unforced errors which is a tough combination," McInerney said. "With that being said, Jacqueline battled back and led 4-3 in the second set but just couldn't get over the hump as she had several opportunities to close out games but wasn't quite successful."
Cako and Smith will compete against the fourth seeded Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely of Tennessee on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. CDT. Boren and Szekely defeated Angelina Jogasuria and Prang Pantusart of Akron 6-0, 6-1 in the first round, and Lorraine Guillermo and Khunpak Issara of Pepperdine 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 to advance to the Quarterfinals.
