TEMPE - The 2013 Capital One Academic All-District® Men's and Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom and the Arizona State University track and field program had four student athletes honored in District VIII.

Nick Happe, Garrett Baker-Slama and Jordan Benesh all earned First-Team All-District honors for the Sun Devil men.  The three selections mark ASU as the only team with multiple first-team selections.  District VIII consists of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawai'I, Nevadam Oregon, Utah, Washington and Canada.

The number of selections is substantial as the Sun Devils are one of just three programs to post three All-District selections in the nation.  Only Southeast Missouri State and Georgia Tech also accomplished the feat.

Sarah Geren was an All-District VIII selection for the Sun Devil women's team.

Happe was the 2013 Pac-12 Champion at 5,000 meters while also earned points in the Pac-12 1,500-meter championship as well. He was named the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Men's Cross Country AND Men's Track and Field.  He was a Third-Team Academic All-American last year and will be enrolling in the prestigious Mendoza College of Business at Notre Dame to continue his postgraduate work.

Happe holds a 4.00 GPA in accountancy and is a student at the esteemed Barrett, The Honors College at ASU.

Baker-Slama came on strong for the Sun Devils this season, finishing fifth at the Pac-12 Track and Field Championships in the 3,000m steeplechase as he demolished his previous personal best with a time of 8:51.34, which is 7th in ASU history.  He was a Pac-12 First-Team All-Academic selection for cross country in the fall and maintains a 4.00 GPA in kinesiology and is a also a student at Barrett, The Honors College.

Benesh finished eighth in the Pac-12 triple jump this year with a leap of 14.28m (46-10.25) to score his first point at the conference level. He was named to the MPSF All-Academic team for the indoor season and he, too, attends Barrett, The Honors College and holds a 4.0 GPA in accountancy

This was the first time Baker-Slama and Benesh have been honored by CoSIDA in their careers.

Geren also earned her first selection to a CoSIDA All-Academic team after posting a 4.0 GPA in anthropology.

She is a member of 4x400 relay team, which finished second at the Pac-12 Championships with a time of 3:32.53, the ninth-best time in school history. She also scored in the 400m at the Pac-12 Championship and earned second-team All-America honors during the indoor season.

The four selection bring ASU's total of CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District selections to 41 in program history, with the first selection being made in 2001.

The four Sun Devils have now all been added to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America team ballot, which will be voted on and released later this month.

The CoSIDA Capital One All-Academic Program

Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected in June.

The Academic All-District® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the second year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored.

First-team Academic All-District ® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected in June.
