TEMPE, Ariz. - Quinn Dornstauder, a member of Sun Devil women’s basketball’s 2013 incoming class, was recently named to the Canadian Junior National Team that will compete at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship July 18-28 in Panevezys, Lithuania.

“This is an outstanding honor for Quinn and we are very excited that she will be getting this opportunity,” said Sun Devil head coach Charli Turner Thorne. “Quinn’s goal is to represent her country in the Olympics and so this is a great step for her as she will have the opportunity to play internationally at a very high level. Getting this opportunity will absolutely help her development coming into next season and so we are really looking forward to following what she does over the next month.”

Dornstauder was one of 20 athletes invited to the team’s tryouts, which took place June 26-27 at Durham College in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. The two-day trials were the start of what will be a very busy stretch for Dornstauder and her teammates. The team is currently in the midst of training camp, which started June 28 and runs through July 7. The team will then travel to France (July 8-11) and Spain (July 12-15) for exhibition games before arriving in Lithuania on July 16 for two days of training.

“Quinn will be traveling a lot this month which is good because that is something that is part of the college experience,” explained Turner Thorne. “This is the kind of schedule that helps build a player’s toughness and helps them prepare for those long days when they are having to grind it out.

“During the trials we talked each day and she was so humble when she would discuss her progress. We talked about the importance of having a great attitude and staying with things and it sounds like she did a great job because she got through a very competitive field and made the team. Now her motivation will be working hard to earn a role that will allow her good opportunities to be out on the floor and contribute during these games.”

The 2013 U19 FIBA World Championship will represent the second time in as many years that Dornstauder has had the opportunity to play on an international level. Last year Dornstauder was a member of the Canadian team that won the bronze medal at the 2012 U17 World Championships in Amsterdam.

Having served as the head coach of USA Basketball’s team at the 2009 World University Games and as as an assistant coach for USA Basketball’s entry at the 2007 U21 World Championship, Turner Thorne can relate to what Dornstauder is currently experiencing.

“To know that you are representing not just your family, not just your school, but your entire country, is an amazing honor and an incredible feeling and I’m so happy she is getting this experience,” said Turner Thorne. “I know it is something that is going to drive her to continue to work hard to reach for her goal, which is to be an Olympian.”
