LEXINGTON, Ky. – Arizona State University volleyball was honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for academic excellence in the 2012-13 season.
The Sun Devils were one of 623 teams that maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA last year. That number is up from last year’s total of 536, setting a new all-time high for the award in consecutive years.
“Our academic achievement is the result of an outstanding partnership between our student-athletes and their academic coach, Natalie Thackrah,” head coach Jason Watson commented. “The quality of that relationship is mirrored in our excellence in the classroom.”
At the Division I level, 131 programs were honored. The Sun Devils’ academic success is a team effort, as ASU has earned the award four times in the last five year under Watson. In addition, five student-athletes earned Pac-12 All-Academic last season, including Bethany Jorgensen and Jenny Teslevich being named to the First Team.
The 2013 season begins on Aug. 30 when the Sun Devils travel to Utah Valley for a tournament. The home opener is Sept. 20 when ASU hosts the Marriott Invitational in Wells Fargo Arena. Click here for the schedule.
