Monday, Aug. 19, was the longest day in Arizona State basketball history.

How long, well travel alone was more than a day.

When the team gathered for its breakfast at 8 a.m. in China on Monday, it was 5:30 p.m. Sunday back in Phoenix.

After 90-minute bus ride to Nanning Airport, it boarded a flight of over three hours to Beijing, where it had about a six-hour layover for its 9 p.m. flight to Los Angeles (which was a 6 a.m. Phoenix time. Oh, and don’t forget the 30-minute bus ride between terminals at Beijing. Yes, terminals. It is big over there folks. Everything. Texas has nothing on China.

After that 12-hour flight, the team had another four-hour layover in Los Angeles before it boarded a 10:15 flight to Phoenix. Arrival was 11:30, and the team was back at Weatherup at 12:30 a.m….over 30 hours after grabbing some breakfast in China.

The fun trip is over, and it had 38 bus rides (we counted), eight flights, five hotels, 11 nights and several awesome moments.

But after all that travel Coach Sendek, Jahii and the squad was front and center Tuesday afternoon at the ASU Fall Welcome for all the new students.

"We need to say thanks to the 942 Crew every chance we can," notes Coach Sendek. "They are driving the student train very well. We have so much energy right now in Sun Devil Athletics with our student population. And you look at the freshman class and how diverse it is...just an amazing group of Sun Devils that we want at our basketball games."

After last year's efforts by the 942 Crew, it is not a shock Coach Sendek is pumped about student involvement.

Student attendance for men's hoops in Pac-12 play last year averaged nearly 1,100 students per game, including more than 1,500 for the Washington game. Nearly 10,000 students watched Pac-12 basketball at Wells Fargo Arena last year. Back-to-back student crowds of more than 1,300 were notched for the final two games.

"First off we say thanks to our students for last year," notes Coach Sendek. "The next part is we hope to see them all there on Friday, Nov. 8. Our first game is right around the corner."
