TEMPE, Ariz.- The Arizona State volleyball team, fresh off fresh off a monumental win over the defending NCAA Champion and second-ranked Texas and off to a 8-1 start to start the 2013 season, has earned a No.18 ranking in the AVCA national poll Monday morning as well as setter Bianca Arellano earning Pac-12 weekly honors following her strong performance.
To add to the successful weekend, Arellano was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week following her performances in the Illini Classic. The sophomore recorded 13-digs, 32-assists for her fourth double-double performance in the 3-0 sweep of then No. 2 Texas Longhorns. Arellano also added a season-high six kills in the match win.
Arellano, a Phoenix-native newcomer to the Sun Devils, also posted 40 assists and 20 digs in the five-set setback to host team No. 14 Illinois, after leading ASU to a win by totaling 29 assists. Arellano average 4.90 digs and 9.18 assists per set, as ASU went 3-1 in the Illini Classic this past weekend.
This is the second week in a row that a Sun Devils has garnished Pac-12 Player of the Week honors following Arellano’s defensive and Macey Gardner’s offensive titles. This is Arizona State’s 18th all-time honor for the program.
The ranking constitutes the first debut in the top-25 since Nov. 4, 2002 when the Sun Devils were ranked 23rd. ASU made its way into the rankings following a 3-0 sweep over No. 12 Arizona in week three- The Sun Devils would climb as high as 18 following a 9-4 start to the 2002-2003 season.
In similar fashion, ASU is coming off a sweep in week three over a ranked opponent- No. 2 Texas- in the Illini Classic this past weekend. This is the first win over the Longhorns since the two programs first went head-to-head in 1981.
The win also represents the second time in Arizona State history where the Sun Devils came out with the win atop a top-2 team. The Sun Devils ousted the No. 2 Cal Golden Bears in a five-set thriller in head coach Jason Watson’s third year with ASU.
