Sun Devil XC Wraps up Competition in Tucson

TEMPE –  The Arizona State University cross country teams continued their season at the Dave Murray Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., on Friday with the women taking second overall and the No. 28 men finishing third while competing as a ‘B’ team.

 Sophomore Adriana Olivas opened up her 2013 campaign with a third-place overall finish among attached collegians over the three-mile course at the Dell Urich Golf Course, clocking a time of 17:06.46 to fend off a clean sweep of runners from the University of Arizona, who finishing is first, second, fourth and fifth.

Shaina Corbin was next across the line for the Sun Devils in sixth overall in 17:20.44 while freshmen Chelsey Totten and Kala Stone scored top-10 finishes in ninth and 10th, respectively in 17:34.90 and 17:38.32

Macy Bricks rounded out the scoring for the Sun Devils in 17:48.51 to finish 12th overall, just ahead of teammates Payton Schutte, Jenna Maack and Miranda Kewley, who were 13th, 14th and 15th.

Of note was junior Shelby Houlihan, who competed unattached and in flats in her unofficial opener for the 2013 season.  Houlihan finished fourth overall among all competitors in 17:05.22, though it should be noted that she was not going full-blow and will have her true opener next weekend at the Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn.

On the men’s side, sophomore Daniel Wong was the top finisher in 22:30.84 for a ninth-place finish in the 4.25-mile run.

Tommy Williams was next across the line in 22:35.99 to finish 12th overall ahead of teammate Kevin Rayes who was 15th in 22:58.59.

Nick Chatel too 18th overall in 23:11.33 while Noah Kenyawani rounded out the scoring for the Sun Devils in 22nd place in a time of 23:48.74.

The ASU women finished with 40 points for a second place finish behind Arizona, who finished with 19 points.  The ASU men scored 69 points and were third behind Arizona and Northern Arizona.

The first big test of the season comes next weekend as the squads head north to take part in the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 28.
