No. 16 Arizona State Falls To Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash.--The No. 16 Arizona State volleyball team’s comeback try fell short as it fell to Washington State, 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-17, 9-15), on Friday at Bohler Gym.

The Sun Devils are now 13-4 on the year with a 2-3 mark in Pac-12 action, while the Cougars are 15-3, 2-3 in conference play.

Sophomore middle blocker Whitney Follette led the way with a season-high 19 kills and an attack percentage of .576.

Follette, sophomore Andi Lowrance and freshman BreElle Bailey combined for 13 blocks of the Sun Devils’ 22 blocks.

After jumping out to an early, 4-1 lead, ASU played the first set close, with eight ties and three lead changes before the Cougars took the 25-23 advantage. In the second set, the Sun Devils once again took the early lead, then came back from a 17-15 deficit via a pair of WSU errors to tie things up at 22 points apiece. The Sun Devils capped the set with a 5-1 run and a match-point kill by Follette.

The battle continued in the third set, with seven ties and four lead changes as Washington State came out on top, 25-22. In the fourth set, the Sun Devils recorded 17 kills and a sideout percentage of 64 percent.

In the deciding set, ASU took an early, 2-1 advantage before the Cougars jumped out to a 10-4 lead and took the set and the match, 15-9.

Sophomore setter Bianca Arellano had a solid game, recording her eighth double-double of the year with a season high 54 assists and 14 digs. Arellano only committed one error throughout the match and also picked up a pair of kills. Senior libero Stephanie Preach also contributed 14 digs in the match.

Up next, the Sun Devils travel to Seattle, Wash. to face No. 6 Washington on Sunday. The match is set to start at 3 p.m. PT and will be aired on the Pac-12 Networks.
