The Sun Devils men's golf team takes its 28-2 head-to-head record to the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Sonoma, Calif., as the team will play 36 holes on Monday (Oct. 14) and 18 on Tuesday (Oct. 15) at the Sonoma Golf Club (par-72, 7,103 yards).
The 16-team field includes BYU, Cal, Colorado, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawai’i, Minnesota, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine, San Diego State, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara and UC Davis. ASU is 28-2 in head-to-head competition through two tournaments and has lost only to the host team. It finished second in the Kikkor Invitational to Washington and to UNM at the Tucker Invitational.
The Sun Devil lineup will include sophomore Alberto Sanchez, junior Austin Quick, sophomore Jon Rahm, junior college transfer Broc and junior Matthias Schjoelberg. Sanchez is off to a solid start, as he finished sixth at the Kikkor Invitational that included a 68 in the second round and was 11th at the Tucker (103 individuals).
EAGLES: Jon Rahm’s nine eagles last year was tied for the best mark in the nation with Xander Schauffele of San Diego State. That also was the most by a Sun Devil in the past 20 seasons, topping Paul Casey’s eight eagles in his freshman season of 1997-98. Jon had three of them in the Tucker Invitational in late September, bringing his career total to 12. Since Golfstat began tracking in 1993-94, only four Sun Devils have more career eagles than Jon Rahm.
