SEATTLE, Wash.--The No. 16 Arizona State volleyball team dropped straight sets to No. 6 Washington, 25-21, 25-22, and 25-16, on Sunday afternoon at Alaska Airlines Arena.
ASU is now 13-5 on the year with a 2-4 mark in Pac-12 action while Washington sits at 13-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
The Sun Devils fought valiantly in the first set, coming back from five-point deficits twice and using a 4-1 run with three kills from sophomore Macey Gardner and one from sophomore Whitney Follette to close in, 21-19. Washington scored three straight points en route to the 25-19 finish. Gardner led ASU in the set with seven kills.
Early in the second set, the Sun Devils used a 4-0 run to tie it up at 9-9 courtesy of kills by freshman McKenzie Willey, freshman BreElle Bailey and Follette, and a Washington attack error. The Sun Devils used the run of eight consecutive points to take a 12-9 advantage before Washington used a run of its own to go up 18-16. ASU tied things up at 22 points apiece via a kill by Garner and a Washington attack error. The Huskies then used three consecutive points to win the second set, 25-22.
In the third and final frame, Washington started off with a 7-1 run, before taking the set and the match, 25-16.
For the match, Gardner finished with 13 kills, while sophomore Bianca Arellano racked up 32 assists and was just short of her ninth double-double of the year with eight digs. Senior Stephanie Preach and junior Shannan McCready contributed 18 and 14 digs, respectively.
Washington’s Kylin Munoz led the way with 11 kills while Krista Vansant and Kaleigh Nelson added 10 apiece.
Up next, the Sun Devils return to Wells Fargo Arena to host USC and UCLA. The match against the Trojans is set for Friday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. MT. Sunday’s match against the Bruins is set for an 11 a.m. MT start. Both matches will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
