Football’s Darby Earns Lott IMPACT Trophy Quarterfinalist Nod

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Arizona State University football student-athlete Alden Darby has been named a quarterfinalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, it was announced Wednesday by The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, sponsors of the annual award.

Darby, a senior safety from Long Beach, Calif., was previously named a Lott IMPACT Trophy Player of the Week for his performance against USC earlier this season. He recorded two interceptions, including a 46-yard return for a touchdown, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, and seven tackles in a 62-41 win.

He has two interceptions, including one return for a touchdown, a forced fumble and fumble recovery, five pass breakups, seven passes deflected and 31 tackles through seven games this season.

Darby is heavily involved in the Scholar Baller Outreach Program, which is partnered with Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, African American Men at ASU, The Phoenix Greater Urban League, and Caesar Chavez High School, and calls for ASU student-athletes to develop and teach a curriculum centered around helping high school students become successful students.

He was recently named the Keynote Speaker at the 13th annual East Valley Pursuing Victory with Honor Leadership Summit. The keynote speaker is chosen each year as someone who positively influences the leaders of tomorrow. 

A team captain, Darby was the first Sun Devil to earn the privilege of wearing the Pat Tillman Practice Jersey, which head coach Todd Graham awards to those who embody the positive characteristics of the football program and university. He has been instrumental in influencing his teammates and other student-athletes to become more involved in the community and routinely leads a contingent of student-athletes in community service and outreach events.

Twenty players have been named to the list of quarterfinalists, including 11 linebackers, seven defensive backs and two defensive linemen. In the nine years of the Lott Trophy, linebackers have won four times, defensive linemen four times and defensive backs once.

Eight semifinalists for the award will be announced Nov. 13, four finalists will be announced Nov. 27 and the winner at the 10th annual Lott IMPACT Trophy Banquet Dec. 8 at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach. The university of the winner will receive $25,000 for its general scholarship fund and each of the other finalists will receive $5,000 for their schools’ general scholarship fund.

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott will be the keynote speaker and the awards ceremony will be televised on FOX Sports beginning at 7 p.m Pacific time.
