BOULDER, Colo.—Despite holding Colorado to a .099 hitting percentage for the match, the Arizona State volleyball team fell in a four-set battle (22-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-23) to the Buffaloes on Sunday afternoon at the Coors Event Center.
With the loss, ASU falls to 13-9 on the year with a 2-8 mark in Pac-12 Conference action. Colorado improves to 14-6 with a record of 6-4 in league play.
Sophomore Macey Gardner and freshman BreElle Bailey led the Sun Devils with 14 and 13 kills, respectively, while sophomore Bianca Arellano recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 38 assists and 12 digs. Arellano also recorded three kills in five attempts for a hitting percentage of .600.
Senior Stephanie Preach led the way with 18 of ASU’s digs, while Gardner led the team with receptions with 32.
Each of the four sets was a battle, as Colorado came out on top of the first set, 25-22. The set saw 12 tie scored and five lead changes before the Buffaloes pulled away.
In the second set, the Sun Devils came out with an early lead, up 17-14 midway through the set. A series of Colorado miscues gave ASU a 23-16 lead before ultimately winning the set, 25-17, on a Colorado attack error.
In the third set the Sun Devils used an early run to take a 15-13 advantage at the media timeout before Colorado came back with a run of its own to win the set, 26-24.
ASU came out strong in the fourth set with a 7-2 early lead before Colorado stormed back and the set ended up tied, 20-20. The Buffaloes came out on top and won the match with a 25-23 fourth set score.
Up next, Arizona State returns to the road for a pair of rematches with the Oregon schools. The Sun Devils face Oregon on Friday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. before facing Oregon State on Saturday, Nov. 2, also at 6 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast by the Pac-12 Networks.
