LARAMIE, Wyo.—The Arizona State wrestling team posted a strong effort in its season opener at the Cowboy Open, hosted by the University of Wyoming at the War Memorial Fieldhouse.
In the elite level of competition, the Sun Devils posted 14 competitors, including 11th ranked Kevin Radford.
Sophomore Ares Carpio led the way for ASU in the 125-pound weight class, pinning Nebraska-Kearney’s Jake Gentzler, before topping Montana State’s Duell Stadel in a 12-9 decision. Carpio defeated Braken Nipko of Utah Valley 5-0, before falling to Wyoming’s Tyler Cox in the final match of the weight class, 6-2.
In the 133-pound contest, redshirt freshman Tyler Liberatore had an opening bye before topping Air Force’s Carter McElhany, 5-3. Liberatore then fell to Great Falls’ Michael Ruiz.
Redshirt junior Nathan Hoffer picked up an opening-round pin in the 149-pound weight class of Wyoming’s Jake Elliott in 3:55 before defeating CSU-Pueblo’s Larry Schmueser, 10-1. Hoffer defeated unattached competitor Brandon Richardson 9-5 before dropping a narrow decision to Boise State’s Chris Castillo, 6-4.
In the 157-pound weight class, redshirt junior Joel Smith bested Boise State’s Taylor West, 13-4, before pinning Great Falls’ Chad Cebulski in 18 seconds. Smith then defeated Wyoming’s Tanner Miller, 12-4 before he fell in the championship match of the weight class to Wyoming’s Andy McCulley.
James Brundage picked up an opening-round pin of Air Force’s Tyler Mergen to begin the battles of the 165-pound weight class before he defeated unattached-competitor Ross Taylor, 16-7. Brundage then dropped a narrow, 4-2, decision to Wyoming’s Dallas Bailey.
In the 197-pound contest, redshirt freshman Luke Bean pinned CSU-Pueblo’s Riley Argyle in 4:13 before topping Air Force’s Jack Carda 7-0. Bean then topped teammate Josh DaSilveria in a narrow, 6-4 decision before falling in the championship match.
Daniel Gusev picked up a 4-1 decision over Tanner Harms of Wyoming in the heavyweight class, then defeated Brook Gosch of the Air Force Academy, 3-1.
Up next, the Sun Devils are set to face Illinois in a dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 16 in Chicago.
