SUN DEVIL DIGITS: The Sun Devil men's hoops team (22-13; 9-9/tied for sixth in Pac-12) hosts Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks (620 AM), as Coach Sendek's faces the school where he started his 21-year head coaching career and racked up a 63-26/.708 mark. ASU will pay tribute to long-time Miami coach Charlie Coles, a former Coach Sendek assistant who passed away this summer. ASU is 17-4 at home in the past two seasons after opening the season with a 96-61 win over UMBC on Friday.
FIRST GAME RECAP: ASU topped UMBC 96-61 on Nov. 8 in the earliest start date in school history...five Sun Devils posted double-digits, including 19 from Jermaine Marshall's in his debut as Jahii Carson also posted 19...Jordan Bachynski added 12 points and matched career-high with 15 boards...96 points marked fifth-most points by ASU under Coach Sendek...35-point win also marked the biggest scoring margin since a Dec. 12, 2009, 42-point win over Delaware State (76-34)...Bachynski had three blocks, and needs just one more tie Dan Gadzuric of UCLA for the tenth spot in Pac-12 history. He needs just eight more blocks to break the school career record held by Mario Bennett of 191 set from 1991-95...ASU's 44 free throw attempts was its most since it shot 47 vs. Western Mich on Dec. 30, 2003...Sun Devil first-year players saw 97 minutes.
GREAT NOTE TO GET YOU STARTED: Jahii Carson averaged 18.5 points and 5.1 assists last season, the first freshman to do that since Chris McGuthrie of Mount St. Mary's notched the feat in 1992-93 (19.8/.5.1).
DON'T BLAME US: Scoring in D-I men's basketball was at its lowest since 1951-52 last year (67.5 ppg). Meanwhile in Tempe, ASU went from averaging 61.0 ppg. in 2011-12 to 71.8 ppg. in 2012-13.
WE GIVE YOU AN OVERLOOKED STAT ON JAHII: Jahii Carson's 488 field goal attempts last year was the most by a Sun Devil since Eddie House jacked up 623 in 1999-2000 (also by design). Jahii’s 488 shots were in the top 30 for field goal attempts in the NCAA and most by a freshman. Dig deeper, this is good...when you break it down, only four of the top 30 shot leaders were more efficient from the field from Jahii. He made .473 of his shots (231-of-488). Only Virginia Tech’s Erick Green (.475), BYU’s Tyler Haws (.479), Creighton’s Doug McDermott (.548) and Nate Wolters of South Dakota State (.485) shot a better percentage from the field than Jahii. Then digest this...you can probably count the number of easy rebound putbacks on one hand for Jahii (he had 16 offensive rebounds), and he averaged 5.1 assists per game.
QUICK STUFF: The Sun Devils, under eighth-year head coach Herb Sendek, notched their fourth 20-win season under Coach Sendek in his seven years in 2012-13, something that ASU did just three times in the prior 25 seasons to his arrival in spring of 2006. The Sun Devils went 4-5 against the top five teams in the Pac-12, with a sweep of Colorado and single wins over UCLA and California, despite being picked for 11th in the preseason media poll. The Sun Devils have a roster that includes five lettermen, three one-year transfer seniors, a mid-year transfer and in those returners the 2012-13 Pac-12 co-Freshman of the Year and the top-single season shot blocker in Pac-12 annals.
ASU VS. REDHAWKS: The RedHawks won both previous meetings vs. Arizona State which were both on neutral courts. The last time the teams met was on Dec. 30, 1984, at the Hoosier Classic with Miami posting a 68-52 win. Miami also won on Dec. 28, 1953, 104-69, at the Troy Invitational.
THE FIVE RETURNERS: They say a huge key in college hoops for any team is to have a great point guard and solid big man, so safe to say ASU has that part covered. How good was JAHII CARSON at the end of the season in 2010-13? In the final six games he had heads turning with these numbers: 22.5 ppg., 6.0 rpg., 5.0 apg., .551 from the field, .500 from the three-point stripe and .800 from the free throw line. Jahii is one three All-Pac-12 first-team players returning (Dwight Powell of Stanford and Spencer Dinwiddie of CU)...JORDAN BACHYNSKI set the Pac-12 and Sun Devil season blocks record with 120 last year and needs just 95 blocks to break the Pac-12 career mark set by Anthony Cook of Arizona from 1985-89. After averaging 4.6 points in his first two season, Bachynski averaged 9.8 points in 2012-13...No Pac-12 player made more three-pointers than JON GILLING last year, as he pumped in 84, fourth-most by a Sun Devil in school history. The junior averaged 9.7 points per game last year in his sophomore season...sophomore ERIC JACOBSEN played in 32 games last year and is weighing a solid 250 now...junior BO BARNES played in 28 games last year and made 57 three-pointers at Hawaii in 2010-11 before sitting out in 2011-12. The 57 three-pointers is a Hawaii freshman record.
