TEMPE – Arizona State University football offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Norvell has been named as one of 40 nominees for the 2013 Broyles Award, the Rotary Club of Little Rock announced on Wednesday.

The Broyles Award honors the top assistant college football coach in America and was established in 1996 to honor legendary Arkansas Head Coach Frank Broyles. Coach Broyles had a track record of producing some of the most successful assistant coaches in college football history.

In his second season as offensive coordinator at Arizona State, Norvell has taken the ASU offense to a level reminiscent of offensive juggernauts of the 1970's under Frank Kush. Unlike many institutions, the ASU offense falls on the hands of Norvell - and only Norvell - as Todd Graham coaches the defense and relies on Norvell to hold his own with the play-calling and coaching without Graham's need to get involved.

In 2013, Norvell's offense has produced a 3,000 yard passer and a rusher currently four yards shy of a 1,000 yards and a receiver that is 75 yards shy of 1,000 yards at the time of the nomination. Only once before has an ASU offense had a 3,000 yard-passer, a 1,000-yard rusher and a 1,000-yard receiver in the same season - a feat the Sun Devils look sure to achieve with three games left.

Additionally, Norvell's offense currently ranks 10th nationally in scoring, 23rd nationally in total offense, 27th nationally in passing offense and 27th nationally in rushing offense during Pac-12 play.

The team has posted at least 50 points on five different occasions this season, matching the school record set by the 1973 team. ASU's five games this season of 50 or more points matches its total from the previous four seasons combined. Four of those games came in a four game streak against Pac-12 opponents (USC, Colorado, Washington, Washington State).

ASU’s four straight 50+ games against Pac-12 opponents were notable because - prior to this season - the Sun Devils had only ever scored 40+ against consecutive Pac-10/12 foes once before in 1996 when the squad put up 45, 48, 42, 48 and 41 against UW, UO, UCLA, USC and Stanford, respectively, in 1996.  The team only has managed to score 30+ in four straight games in just three seasons during the Pac-10/12 era: 1993, 1996 and this season.

In addition to calling all the plays on offense, Norvell is specifically responsible for Taylor Kelly as quarterbacks coach. In 2013, Kelly has moved within the top five single season ASU record lists in seven different categories: passing yards, passing yards per game, completions, passing attempts, total offensive yards per game, total offense and points responsible for. All this was accomplished with three games left to play. Kelly ranks in the top 30 nationally in just about every major quarterback category.

Just over 30 years old, Norvell is among the youngest and brightest offensive minds in the nation and a member of the Todd Graham coaching tree that has produced the likes of Gus Malzahn, Major Applewhite, Chad Morris, Bill Blankenship, Keith Patterson and David Beatty.
