SUN DEVIL DIGITS: The Sun Devil men's hoops team, averaging 84.8 points in its 6-0 start, meets No. 20 Creighton on Thursday, Nov. 28, at 8 p.m. PT in the first round of the Wooden Legacy, with Dave Flemming and Sean Farnham on the call for ESPN2. The Sun Devils are 6-0 for the first time since the 1980-81 team of Fat Lever, Byron Scott and Alton Lister were running around in short shorts and notched a 7-0 start. ASU past three games have been a mixture of good times, with a 79-77 win over No. 25 Marquette on Monday as ASU fell behind one in the second half after being up by as many as 15 in the first. The Sun Devils also had a 70-58 grinder over Bradley on Nov. 22 and a fast-paced 86-80 road win vs. UNLV on Nov. 19 when Jahii Carson dropped 40 points as ASU fought back from a seven-point second-half deficit.
FIRST OF A FEW JAHII NOTES: Since Jahii put on a Sparky uniform ASU is 28-13 and averaging 73.5 ppg. In the 41 games prior to Jahii, ASU was 13-28 and averaged 61.9 points per game.
THIS IS A GOOD THING: In the first three seasons of his career (89 games), Jordan Bachynski averaged 6.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.03 blocks. This season he is at 14.0 ppg., 11.8 rpg and 4.8 bpg. Jordan has a double-double in all six games, after entering the season with five in his first three seasons (89 games).
JORDAN BLOCK-CHYNSKI: Jordan Bachynski with 210 blocks is ASU's career leader, topping the Sun Devil record of 191 held by Mario Bennett (1991-95). Next up on the Pac-12 list is Taj Gibson of USC who had 253 from 2006-09 and stands third on the Pac-12 list.
PAC-12 CAREER BLOCKED SHOTS
1. 278 – Anthony Cook (Arizona), ’85-89
2. 258 – Channing Frye (Arizona), ’01-05
3. 253 – Taj Gibson (USC), ’06-09
4. 210 – Jordan Bachynski (Arizona State), ’10-present
MARRIOTT POINTS: With his 40 points at UNLV on Nov. 19, Jahii Carson is averaging 23.1 points in his 16 games away from home (12 road games and four neutral sites). He has averaged 38.6 minutes in those tilts and is shooting .534 from the field (140-of-262). The Mesa, Ariz., native has 11 20+ point games away from home, including three of the top Sun Devil freshman scoring games in history with 34 vs. Stanford in the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas (Mar. 13), 32 at Washington (Feb. 2) and 30 vs. No. 14 Creighton in Las Vegas (Nov. 24).
MARSHALL, MARSHALL, MARSHALL: Later in this notes package you will read about Jermaine Marshall's career stats and some great scoring numbers, but don't sleep on this note as competition begins to heat up. In ASU's two high-intensity game where every bucket was needed (UNLV and Marquette), he is 15-of-28 (.535) from the floor, 6-of-13 (.462) from the three-point stripe and posted 21 at UNLV and 20 vs. Marquette. Want more? In the second-half of those nail biters he was 10-of-14 (.714) from floor and averaging 12.5 points. He has 980 career points entering the Wooden Legacy.
VS. CREIGHTON LAST YEAR: Creighton defeated ASU 87-73 in the finals of the 2012 Las Vegas Invitational. Doug McDermott had 29 points while Jahii dropped 30. Creighton scored on 11 of its first 15 possessions and led 27-9 at the second media timeout before settling for a 45-36 halftime lead.
HE'S A MAN, HE DROPPED 40: Jahii Carson became the fourth Sun Devil to notch a 40-point game (seven times) when he went 16-of-25 from the floor and had 26 second-half points in the 86-80 win at UNLV on Nov. 19. Only Eddie House (four times), Paul Williams (a second-round NBA pick of the Phoenix Suns in 1983) and The Beard did the same in a Sun Devil uniform.
SUN DEVIL TOP SCORING GAMES
61-Eddie House at California (2 OT), Jan. 8, 2000
46-Eddie House vs. San Diego State, Dec. 18, 1999
45-Paul Williams at USC, Mar. 10, 1983
42-Eddie House vs. Penn State, Dec. 29, 1999
40-Jahii Carson at UNLV, Nov. 19, 2013
40-James Harden vs. UTEP, Nov. 30, 2008
40-Eddie House vs. UCLA, Feb. 17, 2000
HALFTIME ADJUSTMENTS: Jahii Carson is known as a student of the game, and it shows in his halftime adjustments. In his career he is shooting .506 from the field (151-of-298), .446 from the three-point stripe (25-of-56) and .778 from the free throw line (.778) in the second half. He is averaging 11.1 points in the second half of games.
PAST THREE GAMES...
ASU 79, #25 MARQUETTE 77 (11/25/13): ASU led by 15 early in the first half, gave up the lead midway through the second and had Jordan Bachynski get his seventh block with less than a second on the clock to seal the win...Bachynski played a career-high 39 minutes and had 14 points and 11 rebounds...Jahii Carson had 23 while Jermaine Marshall had 21...ASU made 10-of-22 (.455) from the three-point stripe...
ASU 70, BRADLEY 58 (11/22/13): ASU grinded out a 70-58 win over Bradley behind Jahii Carson's 19 points, five assists and seven rebounds and Jordan Bachynski's fifth-straight double-double (15/10)...ASU led by 20 with nine minutes to go in the game...ASU was 15-of-28 (.536) from the field...ASU led 43-28 at the half...ASU closed the first half on a 25-13 run...Shaquielle MiKissic added seven assists in 20 minutes off the bench...ASU moved to 5-0 for the first time since 1985-86.
ASU 86, @UNLV 80 (11/19/13): Everyone will talk about Jahii's 40 points and seven assists, but several Sun Devils got the job done in the 86-80 win at UNLV on Nov. 19...Jon Gilling struggled shooting, but in 30 minutes had six assists, eight rebounds and zero turnovers...Jordan Bachynski tied a career-high with 15 rebounds and had 17 points for his fourth straight double-double. He added four blocks while matching a career-high with 37 minutes...Jermaine Marshall had 20 points, his tenth career 20-point game and the first at ASU, that included 14 second-half points and also had three blocks...the bench got a huge lift from freshman Egor Koulechov, who had 10 rebounds in 34 minutes and added four assists...ASU shot .556 (20-of-36) from the floor and outrebounded the Rebels 24-19 in the second stanza in the second half.
DON'T BLAME US: Scoring in D-I men's basketball was at its lowest since 1951-52 last year (67.5 ppg). Meanwhile in Tempe, ASU went from averaging 61.0 ppg. in 2011-12 to 71.8 ppg. in 2012-13.
KEEPING EYE ON THIS: Jordan Bachynski started career 133-of-243 (.547) from the free throw line, but has made 30-of-45 (.667) since.
FIVE RETURNERS: They say a huge key in college hoops is to have a great point guard and solid big man, so ASU has that covered. How good was JAHII CARSON at the end of 2012-13? In the final six games he had heads turning with these digits: 22.5 ppg., 6.0 rpg., 5.0 apg., .551 from the field, .500 from three and .800 from free throw line.He is one three All-Pac-12 first-team players returning (Dwight Powell/Stanford and Spencer Dinwiddie/CU)...JORDAN BACHYNSKI set Pac-12 and ASU season blocks record with 120 last year and needs just 95 blocks to break the Pac-12 career mark set by Anthony Cook (UA/1985-89). After averaging 4.6 points in his first two seasons, he averaged 9.8 points in 2012-13...no Pac-12 player made more threes than JON GILLING last year (84), fourth-most by a Sun Devil. He averaged 9.7 points in his sophomore season...sophomore ERIC JACOBSEN played in 32 games last year and weighs a solid 250...junior BO BARNES made 57 three-pointers at Hawaii in 2010-11 before sitting out in 2011-12. The 57 three-pointers is a Hawaii freshman record.
HERB WESTHEAD: Runnin' Devils had 90 in back-to-back tilts -- 96 vs. UMBC on Nov. 8 and 90 vs. Miami (OH) on Nov. 12 -- for first time since February 17 (104 vs. UCLA) and 19 (93 vs. USC) of 2000 when Eddie House was doing his thing.
GREAT ONES DIDN'T DO THIS: Jahii Carson averaged 18.5 points and 5.1 assists last season, the first freshman to do that since Chris McGuthrie of Mount St. Mary's in 1992-93 (19.8/.5.1).
MARSHALL, MARSHALL, MARSHALL: ASU welcomes a proven scorer in 2013-14, as graduate transfer JERMAINE MARSHALL joined the program in August after playing three years at Penn State. Last year he averaged 15.3 points (sixth in Big Ten), 4.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists and shot .759 from the free throw line (107-of-141). Marshall has 980 career points, 125 three pointers and has knocked down 203-of-271 (.752) free throws. He has posted 11 20-point games (nine at PSU), and his top three scoring scoring games were against ranked teams.

SO WHERE WOULD 15.3 PPG STAND IN THE PAC-12?: How big of an addition is Jermaine Marshall from a statistical point of view? Well, he would be tied for the fifth-leading returning scorer in the Pac-12. Take a peek at the top "returning" scorers in the Pac-12 this coming season:
TOP "RETURNING" SCORERS IN PAC-12 THIS YEAR
Jahii Carson, Arizona State, 18.5

C.J. Wilcox, UW, 16.8
Jermaine Marshall, Arizona State/Penn State, 15.3

DEVELOPING: After not playing his senior year in high school (2007-08) due to an injury and then taking two years off from hoops for LDS Mission to Miami (2008-10), Jordan Bachynski (ba-CHIN-ski) has developed into a solid post presence. One thing to keep in mind about his development is how two of ASU's past big men developed, as in his senior year (2008-09) Jeff Pendergraph led the nation in field goal percentage (.660) en route to become the first pick of the second round in the 2009 NBA Draft, while Eric Boateng, who played for the 2012 Great Britain Olympic team, led the Pac-10 in field goal percentage in 2009-10 (.665).
