SUN DEVIL DIGITS: The Sun Devil men's hoops team, averaging 79.3 points in its 11-2 start, gets Pac-12 play going in Tempe on Thursday, Jan. 2, vs. Washington at 6 p.m. MT on ESPNU with Beth Mowins and Jon Crispin on the call. ASU has jumped out to an 11-2 start behind the expected numbers of Jahii Carson (19.3 ppg./19-of-37 from three) and Jordan Bachynski (63 blocks/12.5 ppg./9.8 rpg.), but its one-year transfer combo of wings Jermaine Marshall (15.5 ppg./35-of-76 from three) and Shaquielle McKissic (14 points per game in past four games as well as 27 assists and just two turnovers on the year) has been efficient. ASU is holding opponents to just .279 from beyond the arc (63-of-226).
NOTE ON HONOREE THURSDAY: ASU men's basketball is partnering with the ASU Chicano/Latino Faculty & Staff Association (CLFSA) Latino Heritage night and will honor Alberto Ríos, Regents' Professor and current CLFSA president, for his recent appointment as the inaugural Arizona Poet Laureate. Ríos is the author of 10 books and chapbooks, which are small collections of poetry, three collections of short stories and a memoir. Ríos is a Regents' Professor at Arizona State University, where he has taught since 1982, and holds the further distinction of the Katharine C. Turner Endowed Chair in English.
REMINDER JUST HOW GRINDING CONFERENCE PLAY IS: Thirteen of ASU’s 20 games against Pac-12 teams last year were two-possession games (six points or less)....in the 18 Pac-12 regular season games, the scoring margin was exactly 0.1 per game in favor of ASU as the Sun Devils average 66.7 points per game and the opponents 66.6.
THIS IS A GOOD THING: In the first three seasons of his career (89 games), Jordan Bachynski averaged 6.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.03 blocks. This season he is at 12.5 ppg., 9.8 rpg and 4.8 bpg. Jordan has a double-double in eight games, after entering the season with five in his first three seasons. He also needs 35 blocks to set the Pac-12 career mark held by Anthony Cook of Arizona (278 from 1985-89).
JORDAN'S FIRST THREE SEASONS COMPARED TO THIS YEAR
2010-13 (89 GAMES): .570 FG%, 6.6 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 2.0 BPG
2013-14 (13 GAMES): .607 FG%, 12.5 PPG., 9.8 RPG, 4.8 BPG
PAC-12 CAREER BLOCKED SHOTS
1. 278 – Anthony Cook (Arizona), ’85-89
2. 258 – Channing Frye (Arizona), ’01-05
3. 253 – Taj Gibson (USC), ’06-09
4. 244 – Jordan Bachynski (Arizona State), ’10-present
QUICK HITTERS: ASU is 24-4 in the past two seasons at home (8-0 this year) including wins over 2013 NCAA Tournament teams Colorado, UCLA, Marquette and California... Jordan Bachynski has 244 blocks in his career, just 34 short of the Pac-12 record of 278 held by Anthony Cook of Arizona (1985-89)...ASU will open its Pac-12 season at home for the second time in the past six years and for just the 15th time in 36 Pac-10/12 seasons.
VS. WASHINGTON NOTES: Huskies have won seven straight vs. since a 68-51 Sun Devil win on Jan. 8, 2010 over No. 24 Washington...junior Jon Gilling is averaging 15.5 points per game in four games vs. Huskies, as he is 20-of-39 (.512) from the field and 14-of-30 (.520) from the three-point stripe. Two of his top three scoring games are against the Huskies...Jahii Carson averaged 21 points against the Huskies last year...

PAC LIDLIFTERS: Prior to last year's 55-54 overtime Jan. 2 win over Utah, the last time the Sun Devils had hosted its Pac-12 (then Pac-10) opener, James Harden was in a Sun Devil uniform and hardly had any facial hair...ASU has opened at home just 14 times since joining the league (it is 6-8)...ASU is 10-25 in Pac-10/12 openers, 4-11 in its past 15 and 6-18 in past 24...it is 3-4 under Coach Sendek...ASU won openers in 1978-79, 1979-80, 1982-83, 1987-88, 1994-95, 1997-98, 2002-03, 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2012-13...Bill Frieder and Rob Evans both went 1-7 in Pac-10 openers at ASU.

MARSHALL, MARSHALL, MARSHALL: Later in notes you will read about Jermaine Marshall's career stats and some great scoring numbers, but don't sleep on this note as competition begins to heat up. In two high-intensity wins where every bucket was needed (UNLV and Marquette), he was 15-of-28 (.535) from the floor, 6-of-13 (.462) from the three-point stripe and posted 21 at UNLV and 20 vs. Marquette. Want more? In the second-half of those nail biters he was 10-of-14 (.714) from floor. He has 1,081 career points and 143 career three-pointers in 103 career games.
DON'T WANT TO FORGET THIS: In ASU's Feb. 2 96-92 loss at Washington last year, Jahii Carson gave the Huskies 32 points, tied for fourth-most by a freshmen in a Pac-12 road game. Jahii's stats in the final 5:01 were ridiculous: 12 points, two assists, one steal and perfect in two three-pointers and four free throws and he had his first dunk.

HERB WESTHEAD: Runnin' Devils had 90 in back-to-back tilts -- 96 vs. UMBC on Nov. 8 and 90 vs. Miami (OH) on Nov. 12 -- for first time since February 17 (104 vs. UCLA) and 19 (93 vs. USC) of 2000 when Eddie House was doing his thing. ASU is averaging 79.3 points per game, its best mark since the 1999-2000 squad also averaged 79.3 and the 1997-98 squad averaged 84.5.
SO WHERE WOULD 15.3 PPG STAND IN THE PAC-12?: How big of an addition is Jermaine Marshall from a statistical point of view? Well, he would be tied for the fifth-leading returning scorer in the Pac-12. Take a peek at the top "returning" scorers in the Pac-12 this coming season:
