SUN DEVIL (13-3/2-1) GAME NOTES AT UCLA (JAN. 12, 2014)

SUN DEVIL (13-3/2-1) UPDATE: The Sun Devil men's hoops team (13-3; 2-1) plays at the UCLA Bruins on Sunday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. PT/8 p.m. MT on ESPNU and Arizona Sports 620 AM. This game is the only matchup of the year against UCLA for ASU, as the Sun Devils are the only Pac-12 school to play all three ranked league teams twice (No. 1 Arizona, No. 15 Colorado, No. 17 Oregon) and also play surging Cal twice.

QUICK JAHII NOTE: Jahii Carson is 23-of-45 (.511) from the three-point stripe this year after shooting 33-of-103 (.320) last year.

CHANCE TO DO THIS: ASU has a chance to do something Sunday night it has not done since the 1986-87 season and only done once since it joined the Pac-12 in 1978-79…sweep the Los Angeles road trip.  ASU last swept this road trip in February of 1987 and also did the same in January of 1980. ASU has not swept a Pac-12 road trip since the Oregons in 2009-10.

MARRIOTT POINTS: Games in opposing arenas have been a good thing for Jahii Carson, who has averaged 22.2 points in 14 true road games. His top four scoring games are all away from Tempe and he has averaged 21.6 points in 21 road/neutral games. Last year he averaged 20.8 points in 38.4 minutes, shot .514 (75-of-146) from the floor and had six 20-point games in nine Pac-12 road tilts.

40 at UNLV (11/19/13)
34 vs. Stanford at Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas (3/13/13)
32 at Washington (2/2/13)
30 vs. #14 Creighton in Las Vegas (11/24/12)

BLOCK-CHYNSKI!: As of close of business Friday, Jordan Bachynski's NCAA-best 76 blocks was more than 284 Division I teams and nine more than current silver medal blocks guy Michale  Kyser of Louisiana Tech. He is blocking one of every 12.7 opponent shots. Every 7.8 of opponent misses have been blocked by Jordan.

THIS IS A GOOD THING: In the first three seasons of his career (89 games), Jordan Bachynski averaged 6.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.03 blocks. This season he is at 12.6 ppg., 9.4 rpg and 4.9 bpg. Jordan has a double-double in nine games, after entering the season with five in his first three seasons. He also needs 22 blocks to set the Pac-12 career mark held by Anthony Cook of Arizona (278 from 1985-89).

2010-13 (89 GAMES): FG%: .570; 6.6 PPG.; 4.3 RPG; 2.0 BPG
2013-14 (16 GAMES): FG%: .606; 12.6 PPG; 9.4 RPG; 4.9 BPG

1. 278 – Anthony Cook (Arizona), ’85-89
2. 258 – Channing Frye (Arizona), ’01-05
3. 257 – Jordan Bachynski (Arizona State), ’10-present

VS. UCLA:  Jordan Bachynski has five 20-point games in his career, two of them have come against UCLA. He had 22 points and 15 boards vs. UCLA last year in Tempe on Jan. 26 and had 22 vs. the Bruins in the Pac-12 Tournament…Jahii Carson averaged 18.3 points and five boards against UCLA last year…Jon Gilling averaged 14 points and had 13 threes vs. UCLA last year. He has played five games against UCLA and is averaging 15.2 points against the Bruins and is 21-of-47 (.447) from the three-point stripe against them…ASU outrebounded UCLA by five per game in the three tilts last year.

SHAQ IN PAST SEVEN: Senior transfer Shaquielle McKissic has one year to play and is making the most of it in an efficient manner. In the past seven games, he is averaging 13.3 points (third on squad) and 6.1 rebounds (second on the team) while shooting a team-best .566 from the field (30-of-53). In those seven tilts he is 7-of-18 (.389) from three, 26-of-35 (.743) from the free throw line and has 17 assists and just five turnovers. On the year he has 35 assists and just six turnovers and leads the team with 21 steals.

#3 CHANCE MURRAY is the youngest player Pac-12, as he turned 18 in mid-November…#4 BO BARNES made 57 threes at Hawaii in 2010-11, setting a school freshman record…#5 RICHIE EDWARDS averaged 9.7 points per game and 12 double-figure scoring games at Valparaiso in 2011-12…#11 CALAEN ROBINSON (CAY-LEN) is a southpaw who is crafty and a jet. Played at nearby Corona del Sol HS…#13 JORDAN BACHYNSKI (BA-CHIN-SKI) is the oldest Sun Devil (born in September of 1989)…#15 EGOR KOULECHOV (KOOL-EH-CHOV) played this summer in Israel, Russia, Ukraine, China and Estonia…#21 ERIC JACOBSEN is up to 250 pounds from 230 a year ago…#24 SAI TUMMALA (SIGH TOO-MALLA) is a pre-med major and sister plays hoops at Harvard…#31 JON GILLING made 84 three-pointers last year, tops in the Pac-12...#32 BRANDAN KEARNEY (CAR-NEY) midyear transfer from Michigan State last year became eligible this December.

GREAT ONES DIDN'T DO THIS: Jahii Carson averaged 18.5 points and 5.1 assists last season, the first freshman to do that since Chris McGuthrie of Mount St. Mary's in 1992-93 (19.8/.5.1). Those numbers are without equal in the history of the Pac-10/12 for a freshman as well.

VS. USC: USC trailed ASU 22-19 with 6:27 left in the first half on Jan. 9 but closed the half on a 22-9 run and never let the Trojans get closer than  10 and led by at least 15 the final 17:03 in a 79-60 win at Galen Center…four Sun Devils posted double digits, led by Jordan Bachynski’s ninth double-double of the year with 20/12…Jahii added 18 after being scoreless for first 15 minutes…Shaq McKissic posted 12 points, six boards and six steals…ASU’s 79 points is fifth-most in a Pac-12 road game under Coach Sendek and was the biggest conference road win since a 76-57 win at Oregon on Jan. 14, 2010…Shaquielle McKissic’s six steals was the most by a Sun Devil since Jamelle McMillan had six vs. Long Beach State on Dec. 21, 2010.

MANY SHOTS, MANY MAKES: Heading into Pac-12 play this weekend, only four league players have taken at least 80 three-pointers. Jermaine Marshall is one of them, yet his .446 (41-of-92) shooting is the sixth-best in theleague. Marshall also ranks sixth in the league in three-point percentage, but none of the top four have taken more than 49 three pointers.

HE'S A MAN, HE DROPPED 40: Jahii Carson became the fourth Sun Devil to drop 40 (seven times) when he went 16-of-25 from the floor and had 26 second-half points in the Nov. 19 86-80 win at UNLV. Eddie House (four times), Paul Williams (a second-round NBA pick of the Phoenix Suns in 1983) and The Beard did the same in a Sun Devil uniform.

61-Eddie House at California (2 OT), Jan. 8, 2000
46-Eddie House vs. San Diego State, Dec. 18, 1999
45-Paul Williams at USC, Mar. 10, 1983

MARSHALL, MARSHALL, MARSHALL: ASU welcomed a proven scorer in 2013-14, as graduate transfer Jermaine Marshall joined the program in August after playing three years at Penn State. Last year he averaged 15.3 points (sixth in Big Ten), 4.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists and shot .759 from the free throw line (107-of-141). Marshall has 1,121 career points, 149 three pointers and has knocked down 224-of-299 (.749) free throws.
