Evanston, Ill. --The No. 26 Arizona State Sun Devils (2-0; Pac-12 0-0) women's tennis team will travel to Evanston, Ill. to compete against the University of Notre Dame and in the ITA Indoor regionals on Saturday and Sunday on the campus of Northwestern University.
The Sun Devils enter this weekends competition fresh off of a doubleheader sweep of Northern Arizona in the 2014 spring home opener last weekend in Tempe, Ariz.
"We are really looking forward to playing in the ITA Kickoff Weekend," ASU Head Coach Sheila McInerney said. "Playing Notre Dame will be a good test for us as they are a very solid and deep team."
No. 21 Notre Dame will travel a short two hours to just outside of Chicago by car to compete, compared to Arizona State's three hour plane ride. Notre Dame enters the weekend standing with the same record, 2-0, after winning against Western Michigan and IUPUI 7-0 in both matches. ASU and Notre Dame met earlier this year at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan back in September 2013.
In seven singles matches, Arizona State was only able to win one, with Stephanie Vlad defeating Britney Sanders, who was ranked No. 35 at the time, 5-6 (1), 6-3, 6-5 (4). Vlad is currently ranked No. 50 in the country, while Sanders is no longer ranked.
"We are familiar with their players as we competed against them at the Michigan Invitational. They got the best of us in the fall so we will have our work cut out for us and I know our team is excited for the opportunity to play a top 25 team." McInerney said."
Win or lose, on Sunday Arizona State will match up against either No. 15 Northwestern or No. 29 Oklahoma State -- winners advance while the losing teams will play each other.
