ASU 23, CS Monterey Bay 2

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 5 Arizona State University water polo team finished the first day of competition in 2014 with an unblemished 2-0 record after dismantling Cal State Monterey Bay, 23-2, in the night cap of the opening day of the UCSB Winter Invite in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Freshman Alkistis Benekou scored six goals in her second game at ASU after scoring a hat trick against Azusa Pacific earlier in the day, bringing her one-day total as a Sun Devil to nine goals.

Annie Kertes added five goals in a monstrous day for the junior that saw her log four goals in the opener. The five goal performance was a new career high for the junior and, in one day of action, she has gone over one-third of her production level as far as goals from last season where she finished with 26 goals.

Freshman Izabella Chiappini had her second hat trick of the day for the Sun Devils while Ao Gao and Abbey Kerth each added hat tricks of their own.  Petra Pardi also had two goals while Katie Sverchek had a goal. Pardi had an absolutely exceptional day dishing the ball, adding six assists to her two goals.

Gao and Kertes each contributed three steals each in another fine defensive effort.

In the cage, the Sun Devils again split the time between E.B. Keeve and Ianeta Hutchinson and again each only allowed one goal to the Otters in a half of action. Keeve finished with eight saves while Hutchinson had six.   The two keepers gave up just four goals in two games on Friday while the ASU offense combined for 40 goals.
