FEDERAL WAY, Wash.—Senior Tristin Baxter scored points for the Sun Devils on the third-straight night of competition finishing in sixth place in the 400 IM, Friday, at the 2014 Pac-12 Championships. Baxter swam the event with an NCAA B-cut time of 4:14.35, which was good for 24 points for ASU.
Three Sun Devils scored in the team’s top event of the night. Freshman Ingibjorg Jonsdottir, junior Juanita Barreto, and junior Melanie Busch all racked up points for ASU in the 100 back. With the best time of the group, Jonsdottir touched in at 53.45, which qualifies for an NCAA B-Cut time. Barreto finished 16th with an NCAA B-cut time of 55.06 with Busch swimming an NCAA B-cut time of 54.13 in the C Final for a 17th-place overall finish.
Finishing in seventh place, the ASU 400 medley relay of Jonsdottir, junior Tory Houston, freshman Kat Simonovic, and Busch scored 46 points for ASU. The relay recorded a time of 3:39.03 in the multidisciplinary event.
Simonovic finished the 200 free in 11th place for Arizona State. Touching in with a time of 1:46.19, Simonovic added 16 more points to the Sun Devils’ total. Barreto also swam in the event finals, finishing with a time of 1:48.17 good for 22nd place.
Houston qualified for the B final in the 100 breast. With an NCAA B-cut time of 1:02.01, Houston finished 13th overall in the event.
Diver Hailey Casper finished 17th overall in the women’s 3-meter springboard, while yesterday’s men’s 3-meter champion Riley McCormick barely missed the event finals on the 1-meter springboard with a ninth-place finish in the event.
The Sun Devils jumped into seventh place on Friday with 253.5 total points for the Pac-12 Championships. With seven more events Saturday, ASU has the opportunity to climb the leaderboard on the final day of competition.
