TEMPE, Ariz.—The Arizona State sand volleyball team will take its second trip to Tucson in two weeks this weekend, this time competing in the Wildcat Spring Challenge on Friday and Saturday at the Arizona Sand Volleyball Courts.
On Friday, ASU will face Tulane at 4 p.m. PT, and on Saturday the Sun Devils will have a rematch with Arizona Christian at 10 a.m. PT.
This weekend’s seeding is:

2. Macey Gardner and Whitney Follette (1-1)
3. Kizz Willey and Jordy Checkal (2-0)
4. Genevieve Pirotte and BreElle Bailey (1-1)
5. Andi Lowrance and Nora Tuioti-Mariner (1-1)
The Green Wave is 1-1 to open its third season, falling to Stetson, 4-1, before coming back to edge Florida Gulf Coast, 3-2.
The Tulane duo of junior Grace Weaver and freshman Annie Shurtz, went undefeated in the dual competition in the No. 2 position, topping Stetson’s Julie Bassett and Katie DiGriolamo, 21-14, 21-17, before they took own FGCU’s Karina Mambuca and Carolina Jordan, 21-11, 17-21, 15-11.
Following the dual competition, the Green Wave competed in the Spring Break Pairs Tournament, also hosted by Stetson, and the tandem of freshman Tea Juric and sophomore Jackie Wenger came out of the losers bracket to win the Upper Division Pairs bracket. The duo is now 9-6 on the year.
LAST TIME OUT
The Sun Devil sand volleyball team opened its first-ever season last week at the Arizona Invitational in Tucson, taking a win over Arizona Christian, 5-0, before falling to the host Wildcats, 4-1.
Kizzy Willey and Jordy Checkal went 2-0 on the weekend and were named to the Arizona Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Against the Firestorm, the Sun Devils started things off with wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, with Willey and Checkal defeating Betsey Caulfield and Aly Furno, 21-12, 21-15, while BreElle Bailey and Genevieve Priotte rolled past Breezy Tutwiler and Carlee Swanson, 21-5, 21-10.
In the No. 1 position, Bianca Arellano and Bethany Jorgensen defeated Hailey Worden and Samantha McCants with a team-low allowance of only nine total points at 21-4, 21-5. At No. 2, Macey Gardner and Whitney Follette defeated Sydney Smith and Kailaa Heaney, 21-6, 21-4.
The Firestorm was forced to forfeit the match at the No. 5 position, leading to the Sun Devil sweep.
Against Arizona, Willey and Checkal defeated Ronni Lewis and Rachel Rhoades 21-18, 23-21, in the No. 3 position, while Arellano and Jorgensen were edged by Madi Kingdon and Jane Croson in three sets, 21-19, 15-21, 6-15.
The Sun Devils played a close match in the No. 5 position, where Nora Tuioti-Mariner and Andi Lowrance lost the opening set to Emily Kiser and Sara Seiber, 21-15, before being edged in the second set, 21-19.
Sand volleyball is contested with five pairings in the best of three sets, which are played to 21 points. The tiebreaker third set is played to 15.
The team win goes to the squad that secures three of the five wins throughout the match.

THE 2014 SCHEDULE
The Sun Devils will host four matches this season, starting with Nebraska on Wednesday, March 26 at 3 p.m.
Arizona Christian will make the trip to Tempe on Friday, April 11 for a match at 4 p.m., and ASU will round out the 2014 slate with a pair of home matches, hosting Arizona on April 24 at 3 p.m. MT before playing their finale against Boise State on April 25 at 4 p.m. MT.
ASU will also make a trip to California, taking on Loyola Marymount on April 19 at 2 p.m. MT before competing in the Pac-12 Tournament on April 19-20 in Santa Monica.
THE PERA CLUB
The PERA Club, ASU’s new home, is located three and a half miles north of the Tempe Campus on 1 East Continental Dr.
PERA, which stands for Project Employees Recreation Association is a private club for the employees and families of the Salt River Project.
The 83-acre club houses a social center, employee store, fitness center, swimming pool, game courts, and fields and offers children's programs, fitness classes, business meetings, sports leagues, and parties.
This season, indoor volleyball director of operations, Jackie Scarduzio, will serve as the sand assistant coach, joining head coach Jason Watson.
2013 INDOOR RECAP
In the fall, the Sun Devils (19-14, 8-12 Pac-12) unseated the defending national champions en route to its second-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. ASU opened the season with a 12-1 record, sweeping each team they defeated. Battling through the Pac-12 Conference schedule, the Sun Devils rounded out their season in Hawaii, falling in a five-set thriller to BYU. Senior Stephanie Preach stepped into the record books, rounding out her career as the second-ever Sun Devil to reach the 2000-dig plateau. Macey Gardner was named to the Pac-12 All-Conference team, while BreElle Bailey was named to the All-Freshman Team. Caitlyn Francis earned First-Team All-Academic honors, while Shannan McCready was named to the second team, and Gardner and Whitney Follette each earned honorable mention nods.
