TEMPE – The No. 5 Arizona State University water polo team finished the 2014 ASU Invitational with a dominating 20-1 effort over Whittier College on Sunday at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

Abbey Kerth had an exceptional game yet again for the Sun Devils (13-6, 1-2 MPSF), scoring a career-high five goals in the contest – beating the record of four she set against Marist earlier in the weekend.

Alkistis Benekou added four goals in the game while Petra Pardi had her third straight game with three or more goals, scoring a hat trick in the contest.

The Sun Devils blitzed the Poets right out of the gates, scoring a goal per minute in the first quarter to jump to a dominating 8-0 lead.

Whittier would get on the board with its first goal of the game with 6:53 left in the second quarter but that would be that last time the opponent would find the back of the net. The Sun Devils closed the game on an 11-0 scoring run following the Whittier goal.

The 19-goal margin of victory marked the second largest in ASU water polo history and the 20 goals scored was tied for the fifth most in a single game in program history.

Annie Kertes and Kate Enoka both added two goals for the Sun Devils in the game while Liz Kreek, Stephanie Contreras, Ao Gao and Taylor Johnson all also found the back of the net. Izabella Chiappini and Daisy Carter both didn’t log a goal but tied for the team high with three assists each in the contest.

Ianeta Hutchinson played the first three quarters for the Sun Devils, logging seven saves and one goal allowed in the time.  E.B. Keeve entered the game in the fourth quarter and added four saves.

Over the course of the three-day tournament, ASU outscored its opponents by a whopping 64-5 advantage, averaging 16 goals per game.

The Sun Devils will now have the next two weekends off before taking on Stanford in an MPSF Conference matchup on April 5 in Palo Alto, Calif.
