CORVALLIS, Ore.— Recording top-5 finishes, freshman Monica Vaughn and junior Noemi Jimenez led the sixth-ranked Arizona State women’s golf team to a fifth place finish in the 2014 Pac-12 Championships on Sunday. The Sun Devils shot a 19-over 883 (291-296-296) at the par-72, 6,256-yard Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore.
“I am so happy for the team to move up into the top five,” said ASU head coach Melissa Luellen. “Top five in the best conference in the country is solid. And Monica and Noemi were stellar this week, especially today with the tough conditions.”
Jimenez, who placed fourth overall, moved up a spot on the leader board in the final round. Carding three birdies and four bogeys for a 1-over 73, Jimenez finished with a tournament total of even-par 216 (73-70-73).
After struggling with the back nine on Saturday, Vaughn hit the course with a vengeance in the final round. Vaughn shot a 1-under 71 while carding birdies on holes 12, 16, and 17 on Sunday. Tied for fifth with a 1-over 217 (70-76-71), Vaughn recorded her second top-10 finish of the spring season.
Junior Emilie Alonso also kicked it up a notch on Sunday, shooting a 1-over 73 in the final round. Climbing the leader board from 32nd place, Alonso finished tied for 21st with a 7-over 223 (74-76-73).
“Emilie fought really hard and had a terrific score,” said Luellen. “I would like to see more from our seniors, but they are great players and I look for them to shine in NCAA play.”
Seniors Justine Lee and Laura Blanco both shot a 7-over 79 in the final round. Lee, who performed consistently for the Sun Devils through the first two rounds, carded eight bogeys on Sunday. With a tournament total of 11-over 227 (74-74-79), Lee finished tied for 34th. Blanco, who struggled to find her groove the entire weekend, tallied seven bogeys in the final round. She tied for 44th overall with a 14-over 230 (74-77-79).
UCLA Bruin Alison Lee took home the individual title, while No. 9 Stanford edged out No. 11 Arizona on the 18th hole for the conference team title.
The Sun Devils will learn their next destination on Monday, April 28, when the NCAA announces its Regional selections live during Golf Central, Golf Channel’s daily signature news show. NCAA Regionals will take place May 8-10 in Tallahassee, Fla., Stillwater, Okla., and Cle Elum, Wash., with the top eight teams moving on to Nationals. The NCAA Championship takes place May 20-23 in Tulsa, Okla. The Sun Devils currently hold the nation’s longest NCAA Championship appearance streak at 22-consecutive years.
