STILLWATER, Okla. - The Arizona State University baseball team surrendered a one-run lead in the ninth and fell to No. 9 Oklahoma State, 6-5, in 11 innings on Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater, Okla.

The Sun Devils (24-19) were one out away from securing a 5-4 win in the bottom of the ninth inning, but OSU second baseman Tim Arakawa drove an RBI single to left field off right-hander Ryan Burr to send the game into extra frames.

Burr loaded the bases with no outs on three straight walks to start the 10th inning, but retired the next three batters, including the last two on strikeouts. Right-hander Eder Erives (1-1) took over in the 11th and hit the leadoff batter, who scored the winning run five at-bats later on an RBI single by shortstop Donnie Walton.

Starting left-hander Ryan Kellogg allowed just three runs in 6 1/3 innings to record his fourth consecutive quality start and his sixth of the season. He did not walk a batter for the 12th time in 27 career starts, including his sixth this season, and struck out four.

Left fielder Jake Peevyhouse went 3-for-5, center fielder Johnny Sewald notched two runs and a pair of hits, and third baseman David Greer reached base three times, including an RBI triple, and scored two runs to pace ASU’s offense.

The Devils held an early 3-0 lead through the first third of the game, but OSU put together a three-run bottom of the fourth to pull even. ASU scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning to reclaim a 5-3 advantage before the Cowboys (34-13) scored one run in three of the final four frames.

Right-hander Jordan Aboites, who replaced Kellogg in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Burr each recorded consecutive strikeouts with inherited runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth inning, respectively, to keep the Devils’ lead intact.

Greer put ASU ahead, 1-0, with an RBI triple to right-center field in just the second at-bat of the game and catcher Nate Causey followed with a run-scoring groundout to stake the Devils a two-run lead in the opening frame.

ASU extended its lead to three in the third inning when Causey led off with a single and came home on a double-play groundout by right fielder Trever Allen.

Kellogg conceded a pair of hits to start the bottom of the first, but retired eight of the next nine batters he faced before the Cowboys’ three-run, four-hit fourth inning. First baseman Tanner Krietemeier hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame and third baseman Craig McConaughy added an RBI double to knot the game, 3-3.

Sewald and Greer, who reached base on a dropped fly ball and a walk, respectively, put ASU back on top by a pair in the top of the seventh when OSU’s throw to first on designated hitter RJ Ybarra’s grounder was off target.

Arakawa cut ASU’s lead in half in the eighth with an RBI single off Aboites, who hit the next batter he faced and was replaced by Burr with one out in the inning.

OSU right-hander Vince Wheeland (6-0) tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts to record the win. Starting right-hander Tyler Buffett was replaced after the second inning and conceded two runs on three hits.
