After one day at the NCAA Columbia men's golf regional, it looks like eight teams will be in the hunt for four spots at the NCAA Championship. The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo., (par-72 layout /7,141 yards) has just six strokes between the third and ninth spot.
Oklahoma State raced out after day one with a 16-under 272 to lead the 15 teams, as the top five teams advance. Host Missouri posted a 7-under 281, while Arizona State is at 3-over 291 and one of four teams within five strokes of fifth place LSU.
After Oklahoma State and Missouri, Virginia (7-under 281) and Arkansas (even 288) follow then LSU (1-over 289) is in fifth. ASU is tied for sixth (3-over 291) with Iowa, while Iowa State (5-over 293) and San Diego State (6-over 294) remain within a long putt from fifth.
Max Rottluff shot a 1-under 71 led by five birdies and is tied for tenth. John Rahm and Austin Quick are both tied for 23rd at 1-over 73, while Broc Johnson (3-over 74) is tied for 30th and Blake Cannon is tied for 46th (5-over 76).
The top five teams earn a trip to the NCAA Championship. Play continues Friday and Saturday with 18 holes each day.

REGIONAL FORMAT: Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted May 15-17. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. The finals will be conducted May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas. Wichita State is the host institution for the 2014 championships.

ASU IN THE REGIONALS: With the victories by both the team and Jesper Kennegard at the 2009 West Regional, ASU has won or tied for the title in a NCAA Regional six times. ASU tied with Arizona in 1991 and tied with New Mexico in 1998. It won the title outright in 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2009. Sun Devil Paul Casey won the 1998 individual title outright followed by Jeff Quinney (1999), Benjamin Alvarado Holley (2007) and then Jesper Kennegard in 2009. Matt Jones shared medalist honors in 2001.
