Distance Runners Shine At Day One Of Pac-12 T&F Championships

PULLMAN, Wash.—The Arizona State track and field teams opened competition at the 2014 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Washington State’s Mooberry Track and Field Complex.

Following the first day of action, the ASU women sit in a tie for seventh place with host WSU with 19 points, while the men sit in eighth with 24.25 points. Oregon leads both competitions with 64 points on the women’s side and 70.25 on the men’s.

The Sun Devil women’s team scored their first points of the day on the track when freshman Chiara Warner took fifth in the 3000m steeplechase, besting her PR by nearly 15 seconds as she finished at 10:30.85 for four team points. Warner’s time places her at No. 10 in the ASU record book. Junior Shaina Corbin took 15th in the race with a season-best time of 11:19.31.

In the 1500m run, junior Shelby Houlian won her heat with a time of 4:25.49, which was second overall. Also qualifying was junior Payton Schutte, who finished third in her heat and ninth overall at 4:27.44.

On the field, junior Alex Hartig totaled a team-high seven points as she scored four with a fifth-place finish in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 47.89m (157-01). The throw moves her into No. 2 in ASU’s all-time record book behind Jacquelyn Johnson’s throw of 48.58m from 2008. Hartig also picked up three points with a sixth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 15.37m (50-5.25).

Also in the shot put, redshirt senior Anna Jelmini took third with a throw of 15.86m (52-0.50) for six team points.

In the 10,000m run finals, sophomore Adriana Olivas added another two points to ASU’s score with a seventh-place finish at 35:06.95.

On the men’s side of the 10,000m run finals, redshirt senior Garrett Seawell scored three points with his sixth-place finish at 30:01.59, which moves him into No. 9 in the ASU all-time record book, just ahead of teammate Ryan Herson’s 2013 time of 30:02.15.

The Sun Devils men’s team picked up six points in the 3000m steeplechase as redshirt senior Steven Schnieders took fourth at 9:04.04 for five points and senior Garrett Baker-Slama added another point with his eighth-place finish at 9:11.71.

Redshirt senior Derick Hinch tied his season best in the men’s pole vault, clearing 5.40m (17-8.50) for third and six team points, while fellow redshirt senior Chris Manuele cleared a season best 4.95m (16-2.75) for seventh place and two points. Redshirt sophomore Tanner Greeley added a quarter of a point as he took eighth with his clearance of 4.95m (16-2.75).

In the men’s long jump, redshirt junior Bryan McBride picked up a point with his eighth place finish at 7.32m (24-0.25).

ASU picked up six total points in two men’s throwing competitions, led by redshirt freshman Thomas Anderson’s sixth-place finish in the men’s shot put at 16.86m (55-3.75), which tied his personal best. Redshirt junior Kyle Lillie took seventh with a throw of 16.48m (54-1.00) for two points, while redshirt senior Nathan Estes threw a season-best at 16.26m (53-4.25) for ninth.

In the hammer throw, Lillie threw a personal best at 58.23m (191-00) for eighth and one team point, while redshirt freshman Kyle Long threw a personal best at 53.88m (176-09) for 11th.

In the prelim events on the track, freshman LaTroya Franklin qualified for the finals in the 200m dash with a time of 23.91, which was second in her heat.

Junior Brianna Tate won her heat of the 400m dash prelims with a time of 52.82, which was third overall.

Freshman Micha Auzenne qualified for the 100m hurdles finals, taking second in her prelim heat and sixth overall with a time of 13.91. In the 400m hurdles, senior Sarah Geren qualified for the finals as she finished second in her heat and second overall with a time of 58.69.

On the men’s side of the prelim races, redshirt senior Ryan Milus finished second in both the 100m dash and 200m dash with times of 10.40 and 20.99, respectively. Also qualifying in both races was redshirt junior Devan Spann, who finished fourth in the 100m at 10.51 and fifth in the 200m at 21.11.

Both seniors Keith Cleveland and Will Henry qualified for the finals of the 400m dash with times of 47.32 and 47.49, respectively. Cleveland won his heat and took fifth overall while Henry took third in his heat and finished eighth overall.

Junior Cameron Taylor finished second in his heat of the 110m hurdles prelims and fourth overall with a time of 14.15.

The men’s relay team of Spann, Henry, Cleveland, and Milus finished second in their heat and third overall at 39.81 to qualify for Sunday’s finals.

Action continues at the Pac-12 Track and Field Championships on Sunday, beginning with the women’s hammer throw finals at 11 a.m. PT. Events on the track begin at 1 p.m. PT with the finals of the women’s 4x100m relay.
