Sun Devil Sand Volleyball To Open Season This Weekend

TEMPE, Ariz.—Arizona State University’s inaugural sand volleyball season will begin on Friday with the rescheduled Maroon and Gold scrimmage taking place at 4 p.m. MT at the PERA Club.

On Saturday, the Sun Devils will make the trip to Tucson for the Arizona Invitational, taking on Arizona Christian at Noon MT before facing Pac-12 rival Arizona at 4 p.m. MT.

“I think each of us is anxious to begin our sand season,” head coach Jason Watson said. “This is a tremendous opportunity and we are so thankful to our administration and support personnel for making this come to fruition.  There is so much we still need to learn, but sand volleyball at ASU is trending in an extremely positive direction for our athletes.”

Instead of playing best two out of three at Friday's scrimmage, each of the Sun Devil pairings will play one game to 21 points, and admission to the PERA Club is free.

The Sun Devils will play its first opponents of the sand season this weekend, Arizona Christian and Arizona, atArizona Invitational in Tucson. The matches will be played at Jimenez Field, located on the corner of Enke Dr. and Campbell Ave. on the University of Arizona Campus.

The seeding for Saturday is:
1. Bianca Arellano and Bethany Jorgensen
2. Macey Gardner and Whitney Follette
3. Kizz Willey and Jordy Checkal
4. Genevieve Pirotte and BreElle Bailey
5. Andi Lowrance and Nora Tuioti-Mariner 

Sand volleyball is contested with five pairings in the best of three sets, which are played to 21 points. The tiebreaker third set is played to 15.

The team win goes to the squad that secures three of the five wins throughout the match.

ASU’s team pairings for the 2014 season will be:
Sophomores Macey Gardner and Whitney Follette
Sophomore Bianca Arellano and senior Bethany Jorgensen
Freshman Kizzy Willey and sophomore Jordy Checkal
Freshmen Genevieve Pirotte and BreElle Bailey
Sophomore Andi Lowrance and junior Nora Tuioti-Mariner
Saturday’s scrimmage will decide the seeding order for seeding from one through five.

The Sun Devils will be utilizing two of their three courts on Saturday, with action on each beginning at 4 p.m.

Court 1 (East Court)
Match 1 –Arellano/Jorgensen vs. Willey/Checkal
Match 2 – Gardner/Follette vs. Arellano/Jorgensen
Match 3 – Gardner/Follette vs. Willey/Checkal

Court 2 (West Court)
Match 1 – Bailey/Pirotte vs. Lowrance/Tuioti-Mariner
Match 2 – Willey/Checkal vs. Pirotte/Bailey
Match 3 – Arellano/Jorgensen vs. Lorance/Tuioti-Mariner

The Sun Devils will host four matches this season, starting with Nebraska on Wednesday, March 26 at 3 p.m.

Arizona Christian will make the trip to Tempe on Friday, April 11 for a match at 4 p.m., and ASU will round out the 2014 slate with a pair of home matches, hosting Arizona on April 24 at 3 p.m. MT before playing their finale against Boise State on April 25 at 4 p.m. MT.

Following the opening scrimmage, ASU will make two treks down I-10 to Tucson, the first on March 8 for the Arizona Invitational. ASU will face Arizona Christian, followed by Pac-12 rival Arizona.

The Wildcat Spring Challenge will bring ASU back to Tucson, as the Sun Devils face Tulane on March 14 before they take on Arizona Christian for the second time this season on March 15.

ASU will also make a trip to California, taking on Loyola Marymount on April 19 at 2 p.m. MT before competing in the Pac-12 Tournament on April 19-20 in Santa Monica.

The PERA Club, ASU’s new home, is located three and a half miles north of the Tempe Campus on 1 East Continental Dr.

PERA, which stands for Project Employees Recreation Association is a private club for the employees and families of the Salt River Project.

The 83-acre club houses a social center, employee store, fitness center, swimming pool, game courts, and fields and offers children's programs, fitness classes, business meetings, sports leagues, and parties.

This season, indoor volleyball director of operations, Jackie Scarduzio, will serve as the sand assistant coach, joining head coach Jason Watson.

In the fall, the Sun Devils (19-14, 8-12 Pac-12) unseated the defending national champions en route to its second-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. ASU opened the season with a 12-1 record, sweeping each team they defeated. Battling through the Pac-12 Conference schedule, the Sun Devils rounded out their season in Hawaii, falling in a five-set thriller to BYU. Senior Stephanie Preach stepped into the record books, rounding out her career as the second-ever Sun Devil to reach the 2000-dig plateau. Macey Gardner was named to the Pac-12 All-Conference team, while BreElle Bailey was named to the All-Freshman Team. Caitlyn Francis earned First-Team All-Academic honors, while Shannan McCready was named to the second team, and Gardner and Whitney Follette each earned honorable mention nods.
