NORMAN, Okla., -- The 21st-ranked Arizona State women’s gymnastics (7-5, 3-3 Pac-12) team travels to the Midwest to take on its highest ranked opponent of the season in No. 3 Oklahoma, Friday, at 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT in Norman, Okla.
Last weekend against Oregon State the Sun Devils received their third away score of 195.575 to complete ASU’s regional qualifying score (RQS), which is used for national rankings and NCAA selections. Based on the Sun Devils’ RQS score, the team is ranked 21st in the nation. Arizona State has a chance to significantly raise their ranking with a high score on the road.
Competing against Oregon State and Nebraska the Sun Devils lost freshman Gilly Hogue to an Achilles injury that will sideline the newcomer for the rest of the season. In Hogue’s absence, freshman Savannah Borman delivered a solid beam routine in the anchor position to lift Arizona State to its highest beam score of the season (49.100).
The Sun Devils have been referred to as surprising this season with a marked turnaround from the previous season. Against rival Arizona on Feb. 22, the Sun Devils recorded the team’s third score of 196-plus for the 2014 season. The last time ASU hit at least three 196’s in one season was in 2006, when the team last qualified for the NCAA Championships under John Spini. Arizona State also recorded scores of 196 or better against California and BYU, as well.
The meet against Oklahoma will be televised on FS Southwest+ and FCS Central. To see if your broadcaster carries Fox College Sports, use their channel finder HERE. On DirecTV channels 676, 679, and 677 could carry the gymnastics meet.
