CORAL SPRINGS, Fla.—Five members of the Arizona State women’s golf team have been named All-American Scholars by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association, the WGCA announced Wednesday. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50.
For the third straight season, Dani Ordonez earned Academic All-American honors. Joining Ordonez on the All-American Scholar Team for the second season in a row are senior Justine Lee and juniors Noemi Jimenez and Emilie Alonso. Freshman Monica Vaughn also earned the honor.
Ordonez, who earned a B.S. in Finance and a B.A. in Business with a certificate in Sustainability from Arizona State in May 2014, competed in eight events during her final season as a Sun Devil. Despite being hampered for much of the season with a back injury, Ordonez tied her career-low 69 in the final round of the Schooner Fall Classic and recorded a top-10 finish at the Betsy Rawls Invitational. Ordonez was also named to the Pac-12 All-Academic first team for the third season in a row.
Lee, another 2014 graduate, earned a degree in exercise and wellness. In her final season at Arizona State, Lee recorded the two lowest rounds for the Sun Devils with a 2-under 68 in rounds two and four at the NCAA Finals to help the team to a fifth place finish. Excelling both on and off the course, Lee also earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors.
Jimenez, majoring in interdisciplinary studies, held the highest GPA (3.83) of the Sun Devils. A WGCA first-team All-American, Jimenez recorded seven top-five finishes, including a first place finish at the NCAA West Regional. Jimenez also earned All-Pac-12 first team and Pac-12 All-Academic honors.
Alonso, a communications major, competed in nine events last season and tied her career-low 68 in the second round of the SDSU Farms Invitational. Alonso’s 3.60 GPA earned her first-team Pac-12 All-Academic honors as well.
Vaughn, also a communications major, had a standout freshman season for the Sun Devils. Competing in all 12 events, Vaughn recorded four top-10 finishes including a third place finish at the Pac-12 Preview. She shot a career-low 69 three times last season and earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention honors.
With its entire lineup earning Academic All-American honors, the Sun Devils placed the most athletes in the Pac-12 conference on the 2013-14 All-American Scholar Team. California was second in the conference, with three. Two golfers each from Washington and Washington State earned honors, while one golfer a piece from Oregon and USC were honored by the WGCA.
