TEMPE, Ariz. (www.thesundevils.com) -- After the third day of competition in the Pac-10 Men's Swimming Championships in Federal Way, Wash. at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center, Arizona State University is in fifth place. Sun Devil swimmers broke two records on the day.
ASU freshman Gal Nevo (Kibbutz Hamalia, Israel) finished third in the 400-yard IM and recorded a school-record time of 3:46.07. His time gives him an automatic bid to the NCAAs. During the preliminaries, Nevo touched the wall in 3:49.42. Sun Devil sophomore C.J. Nuess (Medical Lake, Wash.) touched the wall in 3:49.78 to finish fifth in the 400-yard IM. Nuess' time is the third-fastest in school history in the event. Freshman Brandon Pierson (Lake Forest, Calif.) finished first in the C final recording a time of 4:01.96. It was Pierson's best time of the season in the event.
In the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore John Dwelley (Brentwood, Calif.) finished second in C final with a time of 49.90. ASU senior Brett Meconis (Farmington Hills, Mich.) finished third in the C final with a time of 51.00. His time is his fastest of the season in the 100-yard butterfly.
Sophomore Lucas Azevedo finished 12th in the 200-yard freestyle for the Sun Devils recording a time of 1:38.49. Freshman Sean Boyle (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) finished eighth in the B final and 16th overall touching the wall in 1:39.36. During the preliminaries, Boyle finished the 200-yard freestyle in 1:38.50 for his fastest time of the season in the event. Senior David Kolozar (Budapest, Hungary) swam the 200-yard freestyle in 1:39.08 for his fastest time of the season in the event. Senior Tom Hickman (Sugar Land, Texas) recorded a time of 1:40.14 in the preliminaries and 1:40.58 in the finals.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, freshman Marcus Titus (Tucson, Ariz.) finished sixth and recorded a school-record time of 54.28. During the preliminaries, Titus touched the wall in 54.47. Also swimming the 100-yard breaststroke was senior Joey Clements (Rowland Heights, Calif.) who finished ninth in the event recording a personal season-best and NCAA consideration time of 55.34. Junior Leo Martins (Garanhuns-PE, Brazil) finished 15th overall in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.63.
Senior John Zemaitis (Scottsdale, Ariz.) finished the 100-yard backstroke in 52.96. His time is a personal season-best and the team's second-fastest time in the event this season. Senior Alex Smith (Houston, Texas) recorded a time of 53.03 in the 100-yard backstroke for the team's third-fastest time this season in the event.
The Pac-10 Men's Swimming Championships conclude tomorrow at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
