Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 12th-ranked Arizona State baseball team (14-4, 0-0) defeated the Brigham Young Cougars (5-7) 16-1 tonight behind the impressive pitching performance of lefty Will Waldrip at Packard Stadium.

Waldrip (5-1), the junior transfer from BYU, pitched his third complete game of the season. He recorded 13 strikeouts, tying his career-high, walked three, gave up eight hits and only one run (unearned) against his former team. Waldrip's 5-1 start is the best by an ASU pitcher since the 1996 season when Phill Lowery went 5-1. Head coach Pat Murphy is happy with Waldrip's performance so far this season.

"Will has been masterful," Murphy said. "I'm proud of the focus he has displayed. Pitching coach John Pawlowski has done a great job with him. Give credit to Casey Myers who caught and called a great game behind the dish."

Arizona State broke the game open in the seventh inning with three straight singles. They tallied four hits that inning, going up 9-1. The Devils had another big inning in the eighth, when they scored seven runs on seven hits.

Second baseman Mark Ernster led the Sun Devils offensively, hitting his first collegiate home run in the sixth inning. The home run was a two-run shot to leftfield. Ernster knocked in a career-high five runs, while going 2-for-4 on the night, and scoring two runs. Shortstop Willie Bloomquist also had a two-run homer, his first of the season. Bloomquist had a 3-for-5 outing, with two RBI and two runs scored. He extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Pinch-hitter Brendan Hines went 1-for-1 with a two-run single.

Starting pitcher Curtis Rodriguez (1-1) picked up the loss for the Cougars. Rodriguez gave up four runs on six hits, two strikeouts and three walks in six innings.

Pinch-hitter Michael Davies knocked in BYU's only run with a single in the sixth inning. Third baseman Chris Circuit went 2-for-5 with a run scored. The two teams continue the three-game series tomorrow at 5 p.m. at Packard Stadium. Scheduled pitchers are Chad Pennington (3-2) for Arizona State and Jordan Opdahl (1-1) for BYU.
