TEMPE, Ariz. -- Zane Gonzalez, a 6-1, 160-pound placekicker from Deer Park High School in Deer Park, Texas, has signed a national letter of intent to study and participate in football at Arizona State University, Head Coach Todd Graham announced Thursday.
Gonzalez, who selected ASU after a recent visit to the Tempe campus, also had offers from Wisconsin and Nevada among others.
As a senior at Deer Park High School Gonzalez was perfect on his kicks, including 10-for-10 on field goals and 100-percent on extra points. His long field goal was a 44-yarder and 44 of his 62 kickoffs went for touchbacks. As a junior he connected on 16-for-18 field goals and again was 100-percent on extra points. His long field goal as a junior was 48 yards and 36 of his 50 kickoffs went for touchbacks.
Gonzalez earned second-team all-Greater Houston honors as a senior in addition to being named first-team all-district and honorable mention All-American by KohlsKicking.com. The Texas Sportswriter's Association named him as a third-team all-state selection following his senior campaign. As a junior he was first-team all-district, second-team all-Greater Houston and honorable mention All-American by KohlsKicking.com. Kohlskicking.com ranks Gonzalez as the No. 11 placekicker in the nation among high school kickers in 2013. He won the Kohl's National Scholarship Camp with 28 points on field goals.
A great student, Gonzalez was named to the academic all-district team as a junior and senior.
Gonzalez also punted for Deer Park High School as a junior and senior. He captained the soccer team as a senior and led Deer Park High to the regional quarterfinals in each of the last two seasons. His team is currently making a playoff run. He was the Most Valuable Player in the district in 2013 after scoring 19 goals as a senior. He scored 20 goals as a junior.
Gonzalez, who plans to major in either business management, sports management or economics at ASU, was coached by Chris Massey at Deer Park High School.
