HAARLEM, The Netherlands -- Arizona State head baseball coach Pat Murphy, who is spending the summer coaching the Dutch Olympic squad, just flat out knows how to win.
Murphy, who led ASU to a 44-15 record and Pac-10 title in 2000, has directed the Dutch squad to a 2-0 start in the Haarlem Honkball Tournament. The Dutch are off to a fast start after beating Taiwan 3-2 and Japan 2-1. It was the first time the Dutch had beat Japan in international competition since 1978. The team he is fielding has two former Major Leaguers, Robert Eenhoorn (Yankees/Angels) and Rikkert Faneyte (Giants/Rangers). Team USA is also of to a 2-0 start, with the showdown between ASU All-American catcher Casey Myers and Murphy to be held August 12.
