TEMPE, Ariz. - Freshman RJ Ybarra hit a game-winning single to left-center field to give the 21st-ranked Arizona State University baseball team a 6-5 walk-off win over No. 11 Oregon in 11 innings on Friday night in front of 3,481 fans at Packard Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
Catcher Max Rossiter led off the 11th with a single to left field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Jake Peevyhouse. The Ducks intentionally walked right fielder Trever Allen to bring Ybarra to the plate with one out and he drove a base hit into the outfield to secure his second game-winning hit in the past three games after his two-out single in the top of the ninth gave ASU the win at Wichita State on April 2.
Head coach Tim Esmay earned his 150th win at ASU as the Sun Devils (18-8-1, 5-5) scored five of their runs with two outs and have now driven in 21 of their last 33 runs with two outs dating back to March 28 against UCLA.
Right-hander Ryan Burr (1-1) earned his first career win after he gave up just one hit and struck out two over the final 1 1/3 innings. Left-hander Matt Dunbar, who took over with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth inning, induced a groundout to preserve the tie and allowed just two base runners on no hits in the ensuing ninth and 10th innings.
ASU took a four-run lead into the top of the eighth, but starting right-hander Trevor Williams, who did not allow an earned run through seven innings, gave up four on five consecutive hits to start the frame as the Ducks (22-7, 8-2) tied the game, 5-5.
The Sun Devils grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a pair of two-out hits as center fielder Kasey Coffman laced a double to center field and third baseman Michael Benjamin followed with a single to left field.
Oregon countered with a run in the top of the fourth to cut its deficit to one, but ASU scored three runs with two outs in the fifth frame on a solo home run to left field by Benjamin and a two-run triple by Peevyhouse to push its lead to four, 5-1. Williams finished the game with four strikeouts and one walk in 7 1/3.
UO starting right-hander Jake Reed took a no-decision after he allowed five runs on seven hits to go with three strikeouts and four walks in 5 2/3 innings. Left-hander Christian Jones (0-1) took his first loss of the season after he surrendered the game-winning single in the only inning he pitched.
The Sun Devils take on Oregon for the second game of the weekend series at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at Packard Stadium.
