In a 6-1 decision over the University of Oregon, the No. 19 Arizona State Sun Devils women's tennis team (13-1; 3-0 Pac-12) earned their third conference win, taking the team to 13-1 on the season.
"It was a nice win for us as the match was certainly tougher than the score indicated," ASU head coach Sheila McInerney said.
Arizona State opened the day off with two wins earning the doubles point, setting the stage for the singles matches to follow.
Sun Devil seniors Nicole Smith and Jacqueline Cako earned their win in a long 9-8 match, while underclassmen Leighann Sahagun made quick work on the No.3 court winning 8-1.
"We were very fortunate to win the doubles point as Nicole Smith were down a couple of match points," McInerney said. "I think winning the doubles point after being down match points was a momentum swing for us."
ASU experienced the same success on the singles court, winning four of the five matches with the No. 6 court Ebony Panoho being retired after the first set with the freshman Sun Devil up 6-3.
"We then came out pretty strong in the singles to secure the win. I'm happy for the girls as winning on the road is never easy," McInerney said.
The Sun Devils will return to Tempe, Ariz. with a week for rest and practice before traveling to Washington to take on both the University of Washington and Washington State next weekend.
