TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State University junior pitcher Mike Leake has been named a First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII selection for the second consecutive season. He was the only player from the Pacific-10 Conference to receive the honor this year.
The selection makes Leake eligible for Academic All-America status. Six Sun Devils have received Academic All-America honors since head coach Pat Murphy took over the program, including Petey Paramore last season.
Leake (Fallbrook, Calif.) is a management major with a 3.42 GPA. He is currently 11-1 with a 1.59 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 90.2 innings pitched, and he leads the Pacific-10 Conference in wins, ERA and strikeouts. The co-captain of the 2009 squad, Leake has moved to fifth on the school's all-time pitching victories list this year, as he currently has 35 career wins, and he became just the second pitcher in ASU history to win 10 or more games in three consecutive seasons, joining Eddie Bane, who did so from 1971-1973.
